This Sunday’s all day class at Japanese Tools Australia, I’ll teach you how to turn simple timber shapes and offcuts from my workshop into small bowls and spoons. Along the way we’ll cover knife skills, carving techniques, keeping tools sharpe and there’s a few little surprises for the day too.

Can’t wait to be joining Greg Hehir from and the JTA team for a long weekend of carving fun at this June!

Greg’s got classes across the weekend, and I’m coming in on the Sunday with a full day class making a salt dish and spoon set from scratch. Timber selection, sharpening, reading grain, hollowing, shaping, texturing, finishing. The whole process, no rushing.

Sunday 21 June | 9am–4pm | Kogarah

All tools and materials supplied, plus lunch and coffee. All levels welcome, 16+.

My carving workshops at are now half days, which means there’s more breathing room to slow down and carve 😎

This is my first crack at a wagatabon-inspired tray - a Japanese serving tray with reeded carving. It is far from being flawless. The shoulders have opinions of their own. The flutes are having a little conversation about consistency.
But it exists! I made it with my hands and some very sharp chisels and a lot of cheerful swearing. They can only get better from here.
Wabi sabi, baby. 🙌

I’m heading back to Make Good Festival on 30 May, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Last year’s workshop sold out, so we’re doing it again, this time we’re turning offcuts into something you’ll actually use at the table. Think butter knives and pickle forks carved from reclaimed timber - discarded offcuts, old furniture, and more - that might otherwise go to waste.

No experience needed, just your curiosity. Using simple hand tools, we’ll work through the whole process together. Beginner friendly and open to anyone 16+

To all the women makers, crafters and artists out there.

The ones who turn raw materials into something beautiful. The ones who keep going through mistakes, doubt and learning curves. The ones who create not because it’s easy, but because they feel called to.

Making things with our hands is powerful.

So today I’m celebrating every woman who picks up a tool, a brush, a needle, a knife, a pencil or a piece of clay and begins.

Sometimes the simplest things are the ones that settle us the most.

I think carving works so well for stress because it’s something humans were always meant to do.

Long before screens and schedules, people shaped wood into everyday objects, spoons, bowls, tools, toys. It was part of life.

When I sit carving in my workshop, I feel connected to that long line of makers. A simple piece of wood in my hands, the sound of the knife, wood curls falling.

It slows the mind in a way very few things do. No rushing. No scrolling. Just quiet.

Maybe that’s why carving feels less like learning a skill and more like remembering something we already know.

A quiet, ancient practice our hands still recognise.
