WHATS ON THE BENCH ?

The following is an MG radiator shell that has suffered from damage and a NQR repair .
Though the old repair may have passed
years ago and had the car back on the road .
Today we want the best , as it is the face of the car .
MG radiator shells of this type are a rare item
and one must do what one can to make the best of a sad situation.
We were given two shells to make one quality one.
In the photos you will see the damage in the corner of the shell.
We have made two cuts and have silver soldered in an exacting piece from the donar shell.
It is a very time consuming repair though one we enjoy .
Our Father Kelvin started repairing vintage and veteran car bright ware in the 1960s and we continue it on today .
Not finished but on its way ,with other repairs to be done .
Thank you for stopping in .
Steve and Dave Wright.

WHATS ON THE BENCH?

We were talking the other day about the practice box in the 70s that you could buy and place your trumpet, sax or other instrument inside the box with holes in the sides to fit your hands through and play away .
So while you have a bit of time on your hands
Maybe consider making a mute box .
So a box of the right size maybe some sound
Insulation. egg cartons .foam . Other .
Holes in the correct place .
This should keep the kids and the older
Kids occupied for some time .
We think there might be some real good
examples come out of this .
So send us a photo.

WHATS ON THE BENCH ?

We bring you an incredible machine .
Kelvins lathe brought in by crane in the 60s and sat on a concrete pad and the walls built around it .
Make / Smith , Barker Willson, Halifax..
At 3 metres long and can swing a 3 ft face plate. H/Power Huge . It was brought in to make die work for the manufacture of drum heads and the machine itself . Also for the manufacture and spinning of steel drum hoops . Photo's here show how scotish pipe
Chanters were made on the lathe with a copy atachment and reamers made by kelvin using only a bench grinder , keen eye , and sharpening stone . Wall thickness of a chanter at 2.5 mm. Very fine work . A bassoon being spun during repairs . Cheers Steve and David.

A SAD DAY .
To have to anounce the passing of our father
Kelvin Wright a pioneer in drum manufacturing and instrument repairing
We were to have him show you just last monday how a drum head is made on a machine that he engineered
In the 1960's that is still in his Secret Room today.
Unfortunately time was not on our side .
Still had it at age 96 .

The photo in front of you is the humble beginnings of Legato . Formerly known as Wrights Music House Victoria Pde Collingwood late 1950. And Before that it was Petterd and Wright at Smith st Collingwood .
Arch and Kelvin Wright repaired instruments, made cornet cases , toy drums and leather cases with part of the leather trade being passed down to us today , we have all spent time hand stitching the heavy leather cases back together , just another part of the trade we have been taught.
We will post more on the mechanics shop and toy drum soon . So keep an eye out . Thankyou Steve and Dave .

WHATS ON THE BENCH ?
We were approach by Brendan Jones with a request to help him put together a flame throwing trumpet .
With a bit of discussion and thought this is the end result .
With the trumpet on the test bed and at the Legato testing grounds we were all enlightened at the end result .
It is operated by 2 back pack gas tanks and a pilot light from inside the bell flair and throws a metre long flame .You can check out
Brendon Jones (Blunderbluss) on face book .
Now thats got you thinking ....
Bring the house down may be !

WHAT'S ON THE BENCH.
This is a 12 volt electric solenoid driven trumpet played with virtually no pressure using micro switches.
We were approached in 1981 ,the year of the disabled to give a chance for a quadraplegic boy to play a trumpet .
With only minimal movement in his finger tips and hand a task was set .
John Wright was working with us at the time and spent many a long hour thinking ,making ,modifing and building this system for a trumpet .The solenoids were attached to the valves then set in resin with the copper wire then attached to the micro switches . As our Father Kelvin was manufacturing large music stands at the time a lot of components from them were used to attach the trumpet to the boys chair and battery so it could be set in front of him in a playing position and his arms set in a fashion on the chair as too put slight pressure on the micro switches thus giving a young boy at the time a chance to play a trumpet So there you have it may be the first solenoid driven trumpet in the world at the time .

WHATS ON THE BENCH ?
A Yamaha Flugel Horn with a badly corroded 3rd valve passage .This type of repair requires the removal of the damaged passage ,then a new one is formed and fitted to the valve ,shaped , soldered and trimmed then fitted to the casing with the other 2 valves .
A time consuming Don't slip type of work .
A craft we are well versed in .
This can happen to any instrument a regular clean will go a long way in preventing it happening to you.
Please enlarge photos to see a much clearer image.

WHATS ON THE BENCH?
A common problem with older Selmer saxophones
is that they can suffer from a loose fitting neck ,
some will be worn at the neck tenon while others will have what we call a Dry solder joint where the solder
has given way from the body of the sax due to wear and tear and saliva . So when you tighten the tenon screw it is pushing on thin air as there is no solder conecting the two together .Quite repairable and problem solved .

WHATS ON THE BENCH ?
We had a Tenor Sax come in and the player had a request for the B and Bb keys to be altered so it would make the sax more player friendly for his hand position.
So we had a look and a think and this is what we came up with . Tuning doesn't seem to be affected which was a concern . The plates were cut out to fit around the pearl finger buttons ,the 2 ends were peined over for player function then soldered to the key work and surprisingly it was very easy to get used to.
Plus it can always be taken off and put back to
original condition if need be .There will be a little finishing of to do when we see it again or an
alteration .....
