This latest tariff might be the last nail in the coffin for me. The only underpaid worker making my stuff is *me* so I’m not sure why Trump has decided that US customers now need to pay 20-25% more for what I create. I ate the last tariffs and didn’t increase my prices, but as lovely as what I make is, I have no illusions that people are going to pay $25 for a coin and another $25 to ship it to them. I closed my website down a few weeks ago after only getting eight orders on it for the last few months and instead of feeling sad I just felt relief that I wouldn’t get that monthly Shopify bill.

I found my work journal from 2020 (and yes, it’s covered in stickers because stickers are cool and I will stand by that forever - work is way more fun if you can give yourself a gold star for getting it done). Back then I could ship to the US for $3.40 (it costs me $23 now), fabric was more affordable, my voice wasn’t being drowned out by bots and AI slop, Instagram didn’t constantly remind me that I could be so much more visible if I just made this photo into a video or added some sh*tty music. This book is a weird little time capsule of optimism, despite being in the middle of a pandemic, vignettes of me hitting goals and celebrating them, of feeling like I was achieving SO much. I was SO proud of everything I had built.

It felt like I was making for a community. And now we’re all drowning in this overwhelming sense of doom, who’s buying a scrunchie when you’re not sure whether you have enough money for food by the end of the week? Why should I shout about what I’ve made when there is literal genocide happening? Are my parcels even going to get to their destinations once this seasons bushfires start? I’m tired and I miss everything that my business, and the social media around it, once was.

Most of all I think I miss that feeling of hope and the sense that as a collective humanity was working towards something good.

This week has been hard. You may have seen in my stories that we said our final goodbyes to our dog, Mia, on Monday. She was my shadow and, despite it not being a surprise - we actually had two years more than the vet initially predicted when she was first diagnosed with cancer, both my husband and I have just been walking around in a teary daze all week. We had decided early on our Brady Bunch was perfect and instead dubbed Mia as “our” baby, she really was the centre of our world.

Whilst I would love to don a mourning veil and take to my bed for a month, there are still bills to pay and kids to feed. I’m hoping to throw myself back into work properly on Monday but I thought I would allocate a day of playing in the studio with no pressure, just pull some fabrics, make something new and put on some sad music. Next week will be a fresh start.

Not long before Christmas 2024 my friend’s home burned down in the middle of the night… it’s many months on now and V and her family are still living in a van and fighting with insurance agencies and all the associated crap that comes with losing your home. Everything is slow for small businesses now (I’ve just had my worst February since 2017!) and we are all fighting against the algorithm right now, but Veronica makes the most amazing soaps, and if you have any money in your budget to support cottage industries in Australia, she should definitely be top of your list!

I just ordered a whole bunch of soaps, lip balms and body butters and I can’t wait to show them off in my stories when they arrive ❤️

Valentines (Galentines?) scrunchies are live, these are very limited - I had intended on them being a feature at a market that I want meant to do last weekend that was rescheduled, so because I didn’t want to drown in heart fabric for months most of these designs I only actually have three of!

ALL scrunchies are buy 4 get 1 free AND if you were planning on gifting these on the 14th, all orders that include a Valentines theme product will be upgraded to express shipping at no extra cost. Let’s spread the love this year because I know right now it’s what we all need ❤️💌🌹

The best part about running a small business? Getting gift requests and putting in that extra bit of effort because now you’ve been pulled into the secret inner circle and you want to make things a little more magical ✨

This morning I had an email asking how quickly my turn around time was right now and whether express post would be fast enough to get a parcel to its recipient by Friday. We chatted back and forth and it turned out that the birthday girl loves May Gibbs AND is turning 100 🥹 so of course I rushed to get this order out today and even stitched together a quick bookmark as an extra gift.

I always offer free wrapping for presents - just leave a note at checkout, and I have a whole stack of cards if you want to send a special message as well. Thank you for trusting me with your gifts, I freaking LOVE it ❤️❤️❤️

The girls and I have been hanging out to do the punchcard trend so we pulled out all our art supplies and then Declan decided to join as well - my favourite goal of his was to see a Quokka this year but I didn’t get a photo of that card 🤦🏻‍♀️

Here’s to reaching goals and becoming even more brill in 2026!
