Poets at the Petersham Bowl

Poets at the Petersham Bowl we run a monthly open mic soiree (3rd Thurs each month, from 6.30pm), offering an opportunity for writers to present their work to an appreciative audience

12/09/2024

The Auburn Poets and Writers Group, of which regular Petersham attenders Danny Gardner and Luke Weyland, as well as myself, are members (and participants in our group shows), presents an encore performance of our 2024 Sydney Writers Festival group show living in the air.
From the write-up in the Auburn-Bankstown newspaper:
A HEADY mix of empathy and injustice with a comical twist,Living in the Air’ looks at the weird, wonderful and woeful ways our lives have been digitised – leaving many lamenting the old ways of doing things are now gone. These include from getting our new car started, ordering gluttony online and running supermarkets’ self check-in services, to robots trying to impersonate humans and humans finding themselves becoming robotic – and helpless when the modern ways go wrong. The show contains poetry that’s inspiring yet steeped in irony
The venue this time will indeed be a Bowlo - in Lidcombe (3 James St).
Monday nights the bar shuts early - 7pm - so best to be there earlier. Our show starts at 7pm (Mon 16 Sep).
Cost; $10 (cash only please) at the door.

Here's a note from Danny Gardner about the Auburn Poets and Writers Group, in particular about the newly established open mic night, 4th Monday evening each month:
AUBURN POETS & WRITERS
Established in 2005 Auburn Poet & Writers (APW) is a body of writers, musicians and artists from various linguistic backgrounds dedicated to composing programs of poetry and music for performance and publication. It has appeared in every Sydney Writers Festival since 2006 and has produced 4 anthologies of poetry. Formerly part of Cumberland Council, Auburn – it now has an established residency at WestWords, Parramatta, where it holds its monthly meetings and hosts the WestWords Open Mic event on the fourth Monday night of each month from 8-10 pm. The event is free to the public and welcomes all styles of poetry and music. APW would like to make it a one-stop shop for poetry and music in Parramatta.
If you are an author or a musician you can apply to feature and sell your merchandise at this event.
For information about engaging APW in your festival event, becoming a member of the group and/or joining in its exciting outreach programs call (02) 9896 6956 or Mobile 0422 263 373 or email: [email protected]

My poem in memory of Willem Tibben:
Born in Holland, sailing
to Australia at the age of five,
growing up on dairy farms,
southwest of Sydney;
these childhood days, much later in his life
he extracted for his poetry,
an engaging way with words,
as gentle as his speech,
an understated wit
was ever evident;
a regular suburban bloke.
but under the veneer
a man of complex thinking
about the world, both close and far from home.

His friendships were diverse,,
from a range of age groups,
from around the world,
an active senior citizen
in groups that deal with verse
and running projects in a mens’ shed,
he had to let this go at times,
some major health concerns,
as well as for his wife,
for whom he was a loving carer
during her recovery;
gentle, kind and generous,
friendly his default mode,
attentive observation
shown in his relationships
and his poetry;
skilled in writing more mundane as well,
an ace at admin,
efficient and dependable
in every of his ventures;
a fascination with the simple,
unearthing the complexities beneath,
distillation into verse,
which he loved to share
both on the stage and on the page.

His other loves were rock'n'roll
and rugby league,
(a chance encounter
in a Lidcombe pub
with a Magpie legend
Dallas Donnelly,
distilled into a poem,
with reference to the battles
of the Silvertails and Fibros);
he was firmly with the Fibros,
in this type of humble home
he raised a family in Doonie;
his foremost thing was family,
the one of origin,
and with his first and second wife,
and the children they created and raised up.

Bill will be forever in our hearts
and minds and memories,
and in his published verse.
