Whilst we get to appreciate and enjoy art as an audience, especially in a gallery setting, the process of creating it and bringing it to life can often be a source of joy, calm, connection and healing for the maker. Art provides a platform to honour the past, present and future… linking generations, sparking conversations, conveying messages or ideas that need to be heard but are perhaps sometimes hard to get across otherwise.

And certainly, that was evident in the stories we heard last week at our Indigenous Makers panel where we had the privilege of hearing from artists Sharyn Egan, Janine McAullay Bott, Beverly Thomson and Rickeeta Walley about their artworks featured in ‘Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered’.

As artist Janine McAullay Bott said ‘For me, art is a wonderful gift. I see it as making memories, it is a great platform for me to tell my stories. I think about my mum as my hands are moving and what is in my mind appears through my art… my art flows from my head, to my heart, to my hands.”

👉‘Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered’, curated by Lee Kinsella, is on now until Saturday 7 December and the gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 12-5pm.

When artist, Nien Schwarz offered to mend a tear in the sleeve of her husband’s work shirt, she decided to use metallic thread she found in an op shop.

And the outcome was ‘Motherlode’.

“'Motherlode' consists of hand-embroidered high-vis workwear inspired by our collective reliance on copper, WA-based copper mining and by a recent artist residency in Queenstown, home of the Mt Lyell copper mine smelters that famously denuded mountain flanks of rain forest, and mine tailings turned the Queen River orange and lifeless. Nien’s embellished workwear embodies a conceptual collision between deep time, geological processes and fleeting but penetrating human activities.” Artist, Nien Schwarz

View ‘Motherlode’ in our current exhibition, ‘Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered’.
On now until 7 December.

GALLERY HOURS Tues-Sat 12-5pm. Entry is FREE

Winner of the LWAG Student Art Writing Prize, Daniel Glover receiving his prize for his submission on Nien Schwarz’s ‘Motherlode’ which is currently exhibited in our ‘Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered’ exhibition.

All submissions for the Prize were judged anonymously by our judges, Theo Costantino (LWAG Director), Ara Jansen (freelance journalist) and Darren Jorgensen (associate UWA Art History lecturer). Costantino said of the submissions:

“The judging panel was very impressed by the student essays. Our top three were ambitious and original discussions of artworks that demonstrated deep thinking on the part of the writers. The winning essay on Nien Schwarz's work 'Motherlode' was particularly insightful, engaging to read and grounded in the experience of viewing the work. The prize is a great opportunity for LWAG to support emerging arts writers and deepen our connection to the student community at UWA”

Recently the Gallery hosted an Indigenous Printmaking and Archival Traces panel discussion, which also included a viewing of prints with the artists.

Globally, there has been a growing interest in Australian Indigenous print practice and the discussion explored the significance of Indigenous printmaking histories. Speakers included Basil Hall (Basil Hall Editions), Brett Nannup, Zali Morgan, Fleur Parry (Djilpin Arts), and Cim Sears, and was moderated by Berndt Museum Co-Director Jessyca Hutchens.

The event was presented by the Berndt Museum in partnership with the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, and was assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.

Intriguing, unexpected, and full of fascinating detail - this isn’t your typical exhibition review, but it perfectly captures the spirit of 'Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered'.

Featuring imaginative materials and compelling narratives, this exhibition invites you to take a closer look at the beauty in the unexpected.

One highlight is Zanny Begg’s 'Military Tattoo Series' (2004), where soft, stuffed body parts are adorned with striking felt and bead details, and stamped with military-style tattoos. A powerful exploration of form and meaning.

'Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered' is on display now until 7 December.

Entry is FREE.

‘Becoming One of Them’, Jess Day, 2015, features a jacket made with 2mm thick car mat rubber, wax thread and reflective fabric.

After lugging the heavy and bulky jacket through nine rentals, Day promptly discarded the item in the bin. Seven months later, we asked to exhibit the jacket in our exhibition, ‘Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered’. Day remade the piece for the exhibition, reflecting on how different it was making the jacket again, this time without a mannequin.

View ‘Becoming One Of Them’ at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, now until 7 December.
