Students got their creative fix at the Cosy Crafternoon event hosted by Sculpt, LWAG’s Student Committee, as part of UWA’s Mental Health & Wellbeing day.

Research by UWA’s Dr Christina Davies has shown that participating in art activities two hours or more per week significantly improves mental wellbeing.

Driven by the thrill of camp, Scotty So explores the often-contradictory relationship between humour and sincerity, creating para-fictional scenes through the manipulation of found objects and imagery. So’s series ‘Shungay’ references Asian erotic paintings, European Chinoiserie, Instagram makeup trends, and contemporary gay culture whilst challenging the aesthetic appropriation of Asian cultures.

So’s artworks featured in de-centre re-centre are new acquisitions to the University of Western Australia Art Collection.

Nuriah Jadai is a Martu and Mangala woman living between Bidyadanga and Parnngurr Community, Newman and Perth.

As an artist and activist, Jadai uses her art as a tool to advocate for the protection of Country. With a steadfast commitment to standing up against fracking, she captures the profound connection between her people and Country.

The land is not merely a backdrop for her photographs; it is an integral part of her identity. She believes that Country and people are inseparable, intertwined in a delicate, symbiotic existence. Her photographs evoke a range of emotions, from violence and pain, to sorrow and hurt, revealing the profound toll that extractive industries have on both the physical and spiritual realms. With her evocative and thought-provoking art, Jadai seeks to spark conversations, challenge the status quo and inspire positive change.

de-centre re-centre is presented with *P - Perth Centre for Photography and Perth Festival. On now until 3 May. Entry is FREE.

Naomi Hobson’s series ‘Life on the River’ shows members of the artist’s community in relationship to the Wukaanta (Coen River) during monsoon season on the Cape York Peninsula.

Hobson’s depiction of the interconnectedness of the Coen community with the river celebrates the abundance of life and colour during the wet season as well as the ancestral history that the place holds.

‘Fragility’ and ‘Enlightened’ portray intimate interrelationships within the river’s embrace. Both artworks are new acquisitions to The University of Western Australia Art Collection.

de-centre re-centre is presented with P*P - Perth Centre for Photography and Perth Festival. On now until 3 May. Entry is FREE.

Recently, LWAG hosted a fantastic art + science + culture day of experiential learning for students from Moorditj Noongar Community College.

Students began the day with a science workshop where they interacted with live insects, viewed specimens through microscopes and learnt about evolutionary biology, including influences of climate, landscape, and interrelationships with humans.

Professor Brenda L Croft is from the Gurindji/Malngin/Mudburra peoples from the Victoria River region of the Northern Territory of Australia, and also has Anglo-Australian/Chinese/German/Irish/Scottish heritage. A multi-disciplinary creative practitioner who has made a major contribution to Australian and international First Nations and contemporary art and cultural sectors, her work is featured in LWAG’s current exhibition de-centre re-centre.

The portraits of Ali (Biripi) and Tristan (Dharawal/Yuin) are from Croft’s project (Naabámi (thou shall/will see): Barangaroo (army of me), a large and ongoing series of portraits commenced in 2019 focusing on First Nations women and girls with cultural affiliations across the continent.

As Michelle Broun notes, “Brenda Croft’s work is a powerful work of resistance… The quiet and defiant expressions of Indigenous girls and women gazing directly into the camera, … encourages the viewer to contemplate these lives as well as those of their ancestors.”

de-centre re-centre, presented with P*P - Perth Centre for Photography and Perth Festival is on now until 3 May. Entry is FREE.

04/04/2025

The 2025 Art Association of Australia and New Zealand conference will take place at The University of Western Australia from 3-5 December, hosted by Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, the Berndt Museum and the UWA School of Design, supported by the Institute of Advanced Studies.

Proposals for panel sessions are now open, with the call for papers coming in June.

The 2025 AAANZ Conference ‘Unruly Objects’ looks at the uncontrollable, excessive, surplus and unruly qualities of objects that we attempt to study, curate, discipline and subject to discourse. Thinking beyond simply the agency of objects, we turn specifically to their rowdy, disruptive, and ungovernable aspects – whether they be leaking out of unwieldy collections, unexhibitable or unthinkable, fugitive or lost, or brimming with vitality, power or ancestral subjectivity.

For more information or to submit a panel session proposal, please follow the link.
