‘WANDERING ARTWORK’
During our ’Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered’ exhibition opening we had two mysterious, yet unmissable characters meandering through the crowd donning helmets created by Perth artists, Jody Quackenbush.
The helmets, one clad in soft furry fabric and the other bedazzled with shiny jewels feature wonderful detail and are very much synonymous with the artist's signature style.
Quackenbush has a number of works featured in the exhibition: ‘Mask I’, 2014, ‘Mask II’, 2014 and ‘Mask III’, 2014 as well as ‘Strong garment II / Suan Prung’, 2020–24 and ‘The opposite of enlightenment, meditation mattress’, 2024.

It was a privilege to witness Rina Franz’s installation of ‘The Invisible Thread’, 2024, one of the artworks realised for our current exhibition ‘Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered’. The remarkable installation includes 170 blue and white collars intricately suspended from the ceiling, creating a striking result that draws you into the story behind its creation.
The artwork honours Franz’s mother, who was a seamstress and the valuable contribution that women made in post-war Italian society that was often underestimated, overlooked, or not acknowledged.
“This project is deeply personal. It unravels my childhood memories in Italy, offering a glimpse into a transformative period in the country’s history. It aims to provide a tangible link between my own heritage and the cultural memory that informs the migrant experience…
As a seamstress, my mother kept a notebook, meticulously recording the names of her clients. Embroidered onto each collar is the name of those individual wearers.” Franz has said of ‘The Invisible Thread’.
‘The Invisible Thread’ exhibiting now at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery until 7 December.
