Small group lessons available please email me at [email protected] for info It is also my personal mental health programme. I sew for fun, socialization and well-being. I enjoy the process of creating sustainably using re
purposed fabrics and sewing notions as much as possible. I sew at home and I also sew with friends in different groups. I volunteer for a disability op-shop where I help to sort the craft, sewing donations and repair machines that are donated. Ali Made It NFP is principally a hobby. I like to think that repurposing and thinking sustainably may impact positively on landfill and our environment and I try to fix and reuse things as much as I can and teach by example about the importance of these small actions. Most of the materials I use to make things are repurposed and are stitched professionally by me for someone else to love and enjoy. It also makes it cheaper for me to collect! My mother taught me to sew when I was 11. When I left school all I could do was sew so I worked in factories making wedding dresses, high visibility jackets and designer label clothes in the 'rag trade' before starting my own business as a dressmaker – which I did for a few years. I prefer smaller sewing projects and I love quilting in the traditional manner – using what I have. I also enjoy doing small and simple alterations which ultimately give clothes another chance! I have been bold with some of my visible mending projects too! I visit op-shops and garage sales and buy and fix older sewing machines, clothes, fabrics, zips, buttons and threads and repurpose them for my 'stash' - much of the fabric I find is new or in good condition. I bring all my treasures home, wash, unpick, cut, recycle and put the fabrics and notions with my stash where they wait to be reinvented! It is all part of my philosophy to reuse as much as I can and to create new things more sustainably. It is also important for me to save things from landfill so I tend to accumulate sewing machines that have been dumped and try my hardest to restore and refurbish the ones I can with the help of some professionals when necessary! Ali Made NFP It has donated to charities in Australia, the Philippines and Bali. I have also been involved in making hampers of essential items and gifting them to those in need - women in crisis at refuge centres, homeless men and individual requests for assistance. I sew for friends and with friends and for people who I have met through my sewing who have become friends too! You can view some of my creations, ideas and posts on this page.
