If nothing changes, nothing changes.

One of the questions I often ask when I'm speaking with someone who is exploring my business is: “If nothing changes in the next 12 months, what would concern you?” It's a simple question, but it can be a surprisingly difficult one to answer because it makes you look beyond what you want to change and think about what happens if you don't.

Interestingly, two of the most common things I hear are “I don't have the time to start a business” and “I don't have the money to invest in one.” And I completely understand both. Life is busy, the cost of living is real and starting something new does require something from you. But often the very reason that person is looking in the first place is because they want more time and greater financial freedom. That's where the uncomfortable little circle appears. If lack of time and money stops you from doing anything differently... where will the extra time and money come from?

That doesn't mean my business is the answer for everyone, nor does it mean you should jump into the first thing that comes along simply because you want change. Sometimes the right change might be a new job, learning a skill, starting a side business, changing your spending, studying or taking a completely different path. But at some point, creating a different outcome generally requires us to do something differently.

So perhaps the question isn't just “Where would I like to be 12 months from now?” Ask yourself the slightly harder one: “If I change absolutely nothing, where am I likely to be 12 months from now... and am I okay with that?”

Because as simple as it sounds, if nothing changes, nothing changes. 💛

And if the answer to that 12-month question makes you a little uncomfortable, maybe that's not a bad thing. Sometimes discomfort isn't telling us to stop. Sometimes it's the thing that finally gets us moving.

This popped up on our local news and naturally caught my attention. 😊

More people are looking beyond the traditional 9–5 and exploring ways to build an income online, and I particularly liked that this story didn't pretend it was an overnight success story. Because it isn't.

I've been building my online business for nearly 14 years, and while it has given me incredible flexibility and the ability to work from wherever life takes me, it still requires commitment, consistency and a willingness to learn. The difference is that I've been able to build it around my life rather than continually trying to fit my life around my work.

If you've been watching the growth of online business and wondering whether there might be something out there that could work for you too, that's exactly what I help people explore. You don't need to decide anything before you have the information. Sometimes it simply starts with being curious enough to take a look. 💛

I think September 1st might be giving January 1st a run for its money. 😂🌸

Here in the Southern Hemisphere, today is the first day of spring. The weather is starting to change, the days are getting longer and there's that lovely feeling of coming out of winter and into something new. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, September means a new school year for many families. New teachers, new classrooms, new routines and fresh starts everywhere.

It got me thinking about how much importance we put on January when it comes to starting something new. New Year's resolutions, new goals, new habits, new plans. But who decided we only get one big reset button a year? You don't need January 1st, a Monday, your next birthday or the perfect set of circumstances to decide that you're ready for something different.

Maybe September is the month you explore personal development for the first time. Maybe you investigate that business you've been curious about, start the hobby you've been talking about forever, sign up for the class, change a habit, set a new goal or simply decide to do something that makes life feel a little more exciting again. It doesn't have to be a huge, life-altering decision. Sometimes something new starts with nothing more dramatic than “I wonder what would happen if I gave this a go?”

So, happy September! 🌸 Whether you're heading into spring, a new school year, autumn or simply another Tuesday, I'm declaring today a perfectly good day for a fresh start. 😂 You don't have to know exactly where something will lead before you begin. Sometimes you just need to be curious enough to take the first step and see what happens. 💛

Not every mistake needs to be prevented.

I was thinking more about an earlier post and the fine line between guiding someone and taking over their journey. It made me realise there's another fine line we navigate all the time: knowing when we're protecting someone from genuine harm and when we're simply protecting them from making a mistake.

Of course there are times when we absolutely need to step in. If the consequence could affect someone's safety or cause serious harm, that's different. But sometimes we intervene simply because we can see what's about to happen. We've made that mistake before, we know how it ends, and every instinct tells us to save them from having to learn the lesson the hard way. The problem is, sometimes the hard way is exactly where the learning happens.

Think about how many things you've learned because you got them wrong first. The decision you wouldn't make again. The business idea that didn't work. The conversation you handled badly. The money you spent that you probably shouldn't have. 😂 Those experiences didn't just teach you what not to do, they helped build your judgement, resilience and confidence. If someone had prevented every one of those mistakes, you might have avoided some discomfort, but you also wouldn't be the person you are because of them.

Maybe part of supporting someone isn't always clearing the obstacles from their path. Sometimes it's making sure they're safe enough to stumble, being there if they need you, and trusting them to learn from what happens next. Because there's a big difference between keeping someone safe and keeping someone comfortable, and growth very rarely happens when we're protected from every opportunity to get something wrong. 💛

There’s a fine line between guiding someone and taking over their journey.

My little man has recently discovered that he really enjoys cooking. He decides what he wants to make, I get the ingredients, and then my role is mostly to be there, guide him when he needs it and make sure he doesn't burn himself or the house down. 😂

What I've noticed is how tempting it can be to jump in. I know an easier way to chop that. I wouldn't mix it like that. Here, let me show you. All completely well-intentioned, of course, but if I constantly tell him how I would do everything, at what point does it stop being his experience and become mine? He has already imagined what he wants to create and, more importantly, he's excited about creating it. My job isn't to make him cook like me. It's to give him enough guidance and confidence to discover how he does it.

It made me think about how often we do this to each other as adults too. We share our experiences, give advice and sometimes try to protect people from making the same mistakes we made. Most of the time it comes from a really good place. But our experience isn't necessarily their experience, and if we're not careful, support can quietly become instruction. We can take away someone's individuality, their opportunity to make mistakes and learn, and sometimes even the joy that made them want to try in the first place.

There's growth on both sides of that relationship. Being willing to learn from someone who has walked the path before you is incredibly valuable, but so is learning how to guide someone without needing them to walk it exactly as you did. Sometimes the best support isn't saying “Here's how you should do it.” It's saying “I'm right here if you need me. Now go and see what you can create.” 💛

You have to give to get.

It's such a simple concept, but the more I think about it, the more I realise it applies to almost everything we want in life.

If you want to get fit, you have to give some of your time and energy to exercise. If you want a genuine friendship, you have to give friendship, effort and commitment in return. If you want the promotion, you need to give results and show that you're ready for it. And if you want to build a successful business, you have to be prepared to invest in it, whether that's your time, your energy, your mindset, your money or usually a combination of all of them.

We seem to understand this naturally in so many areas of life, yet sometimes when it comes to our bigger goals, we hope there might be a way to get the result without giving anything up along the way. But growth nearly always asks something of us. Sometimes it's money. Sometimes it's an hour of your day. Sometimes it's stepping outside your comfort zone, changing a habit or giving up the belief that has been keeping you exactly where you are.

Other than perhaps the air we breathe, I can't think of much in life that comes from absolutely nothing... and technically you still have to make the effort to breathe, so I'm claiming that one too. 😂 The question isn't really whether you'll have to give something to achieve what you want. It's whether what you're prepared to give is worth what you could get in return. For the goals that genuinely matter to me, I know my answer. 💛
