It was a delight to celebrate the launch of de-centre re-centre with artists and supporters. Nan Roma Winmar provided an inspiring Welcome to Country, and Michelle Broun’s opening speech powerfully articulated the themes of the show: diversity, sovereignty, the impact of colonisation, resistance, and healing through photography.

de-centre re-centre is a major exhibition of photography from around Australia showcasing artists who speak from a broad range of experiences and perspectives.

de-centre re-centre, Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery withP*P - Perth Centre for Photography and Perth Festival, runs to 3 May, Tues – Sat 11am – 4pm, Entry is FREE.

Collective 2024 Artist Feature, Rebeca Dagnall

This series is an exploration of how the Australian Gothic haunts our response to the Australian landscape. Drawing on contemporary and familiar imagery of the Australian bush, the images in this series harbor suggestions of dingoes stealing babes and travelers murdered.

Rebecca Dagnall’s work explores the relationship between people and place, looking to the natural world to examine the Australian psyche. Her dark and unsettling images create a sense of unease and discomfort that invites the viewer to question their own relationship with the land we inhabit. Often haunting, Dagnall’s work sits within the field of the Australian Gothic. Rebecca Dagnall is currently represented by Art Collective WA

‘Curiosity killed the cat’, from the series Weapon of choice, challenges the systematic abuse of women in Japanese society through the revisiting a summer of violence that I experienced at the age of fourteen.

Minami Ivory was born and raised in Hokkaido, Japan, and moved to Australia at the age of 15. Her works are drawn from notions of cultural identity and issues on Japanese women in the society. Minami has exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Collective 2024 artist feature: Madeleine Fogliani, ‘8 Metres Deep in Debt, 2024’

A shopping trolley, 8 metres deep in the sea. Unbeknownst to anyone on the surface, the trolley sits on the ocean floor, out of sight, a hidden burden. Photographed while freediving around Perth waters, this scene became symbolic of the rising cost of living in our current society. People are struggling.

Madeleine Fogliani is a Perth based photographer specialising in conceptual and portrait photography.

Collective is WA’s largest photographic art exhibition featuring 100 original prints for sale, showcasing local, interstate, and international talent.
