By submitting to Pasifika Film Fest in 2020, your film with have the opportunity to reach even more communities across Oceania with PFF's new 'Island Hop' Festival format.

2019 has seen a wave of Pacific film produced and screened around the world and so our focus for 2020 is to lay the foundation for these films to be accessible to their own communities as well as others throughout the islands,

and by doing so, inspire further production of local content and an allied sense of pride and purpose for all Pacific nations. In 2020, our objective is to extend our outreach and impact by producing a festival that screens films across Oceania during the month of October, thus increasing engagement with film in the region and sharing more Pasifika stories with more people. The structure of the 2020 festival will be a diverse program of Pacific films screening for the duration of October across multiple Pacific Island nations, hosted by a local venue or venues.

📄: More than 80 years after World War II, unexploded bombs continue to kill and injure people across the Solomon Islands. The War Below: Restoring Hope in the Solomon Islands follows Maeverlyn Pitanoe and Lorettalyn Ale, two women whose lives have been forever changed by these hidden remnants of war. As Maeverlyn establishes the country’s first survivor-led charity and Lorettalyn rebuilds her family’s life after a devastating explosion, the film reveals the enduring human cost of a conflict that never truly ended for the people living among its legacy.

🎞️: Algorithm of Shame: In the Village, Everybody Knows

📄: In Fiji, public shaming has long been used to enforce behaviour and maintain social order within communities. Today, that practice has been transformed by social media, where humiliation can spread instantly and without limits.

Algorithm of Shame follows Rhonda, a trans woman working to protect her community after the death of a friend targeted online, and Lynda, a politician fighting to rebuild her life after a private video was leaked to the public. Told almost entirely in the iTaukei language, the film examines how digital platforms are reshaping culture, accountability and human relationships across the Pacific.

🎞️: Before the Moon Falls

📄: In May 2024, news of a murder in the Polynesian nation of Samoa rocked the Pacific. The perpetrator—Sia Figiel—was a trailblazing novelist and poet who earned international acclaim for being the first to write about the difficult realities Samoan girls and women face. The victim was her friend, who was also a poet.

This film was a portrait of Sia Figiel eight years in the making when the murder happened. Now it offers an in-depth and thought-provoking look at Sia’s journey leading up to the tragedy, illuminating the complexities of inconsistently treated mental illness and the devastating toll it can exact on individuals, families and entire communities.
