Stories of Giants

Stories of Giants A creative community project using wood salvaged from the June 2021 storm in the Dandenong Ranges. Two years on we are all at different stages of recovery.

We are hosting a series of free creative workshops to share our experiences of the June 2021 storms. Using wood salvaged from the Dandenong Ranges, we will paint, draw, write, burn or carve our stories, with a focus on recovery, resilience and hope. Everyone in our community was impacted in one way or another, and we would like to creatively document those experiences. Workshops will be held in a

safe and supportive environment at Emma Jennings Gallery in Olinda, with an option to participate at home. We have prepared enough wood for everyone of all ages and abilities to participate. The finished work will be published in a catalogue and exhibited alongside a series of portraits of impacted residents and volunteers by Emma Jennings at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in June 2024. All welcome, all materials supplied, no experience necessary! For more information and workshop dates visit: www.emmajennings.com.au/storiesofgiants

This is a FREE community project, proudly supported by the Regional Community Recovery Committees Project with funding from Yarra Ranges Council and Emergency Recovery Victoria.

I hope you can come next week to our Thank a First Responder evening! I'm hosting a workshop for first responders and their families from 4-6pm, and inviting the community to come afterwards for a light supper, to re-connect and say thanks.
I will be bringing all the artwork blocks I still have (I have a lot!), so if you haven't collected yours yet, please come so you can take it home! Thursday 12 June at Olinda Community House.

Today is the last day to see Stories of Giants at the Cardinia Cultural Centre! It's an amazing space with a lovely cafe by the lake in Pakenham. This may be the last time the portraits are all shown together so don't miss it! Thank you to everyone who let us display their artwork again, and to those came along and made new work. Thanks Rob Curlew for these photos.

If you missed our opening celebration last year at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum, and you'd like to re-connect with community and friends, please come along to our Celebration Event at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Sunday May 11, 1-3pm. I am there every Wednesday as artist in residence, sharing our amazing project with visitors, making paint (a mess!) with soil and charcoal. Come and say hi!

Stories of Giants goes on tour! Hi everyone, our project is going into the Cardinia Cultural Centre where I will be artist in residence from April 5 to May 18. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the benefits of being creative after a natural disaster like the storm we all experienced in 2021. There was another extreme storm in 2024 that impacted Emerald, and other Cardinia residents have experienced multiple bushfires and floods over recent years.

I would like to use this as a hub for sharing our experiences with other impacted residents, first responders and emergency management teams from other local government areas.

I still have about 20 works that haven’t been collected yet, so please let me know if you would not like your work to be displayed. If you have yours at home and would like to be involved please bring it in to Emma Jennings Gallery in Olinda - I would love to have as many as possible!

Remember the gallery has moved - I'm just around the corner next to Dudley’s restaurant, opposite the police station.

You can come any day between now and next Tuesday between 10am and 4pm. If I’m not there Justine from Mountain Ash Yarnery next door has kindly offered to be a collection point. I’m not actually open this week but I’ll be in and out of the studio doing last minute preparation for next week’s installation!

Stay tuned for details of a gathering at the Cardinia Cultural Centre to celebrate the project and our wonderful community.

Hi everyone, I still have a lot of lovely artwork to be collected. You might like to have it on display at home for Christmas! I will keep it safe until you can come and collect, but I'm open every day now until Christmas, and late this Friday until 7pm which might help. Also a reminder the gallery has moved around the corner next to Dudleys's Restaurant!

It's been lovely to see everyone again as they come to collect their artworks.

We are doing the big move on Friday and Saturday so if you're free to pop in to collect your work that would be great (fewer things to move into the new gallery!). If you have 10 minutes to carry a box around the corner into the new space that would be even more amazing! Lots of people have offered to help me move so if I'm doing what I don't normally do and saying yes please!

If you can't make it this week I'll take care of your work until I see you again. Emma
