Karen Davitt- Background , methodology , awards and other info

Qualifications
Karen holds a Bachelor Degree in Acting from the VCA School of Drama (1987). She is a graduate of the Philippe Gaulier School in London. She is midway through a Master of Teaching at Latrobe University.
She has an extensive background in the industry, with over 30 years’ experience as a performer/director both in Australia and overseas. Her long and varied career includes lead roles in television (Blue Heelers, Stark, Stingers, MDA, Skirts, A Country Practice, Wildside, Mercury, The Man from Snowy River, State Coroner), film (Quigley Down Under, Ned Kelly, The Ripper, Heaven, A Dancing Foot and a Praying Knee), and theatre (roles with State Theatre Company of South Australia, Melbourne Theatre Company, La Mama Theatre, The Church, and many independent companies).
Karen has worked behind the camera as director, collaborator, art director, latex creature/puppet creator, animator, musical director. She has created her own multidisciplinary theatre and film work, along with festival and touring shows.
Notably, she was writer and artistic director of the acclaimed SUBTERRAIN for Melbourne International Festival, and she received an AFI Award and Yoram Gross Award for her short film collaboration Lovely Day. She also worked as a special effects and latex creature and props creator on various projects including the "Lord of the Rings "trilogy in NZ.

Karen has over 15 years’ experience in teaching acting and over that time has honed and developed a teaching methodology that focuses specifically on screen work.
Karen has taught and lectured in a broad range of areas including classical text, mask, Laban, Chekov, devising and improvisation, as well as working to camera .
Philosophically, while being clearly aware of the different demands and disciplines of each, Karen does not differentiate between live and screen performance but works by utilising the camera as a powerful practical training tool for actors working in all mediums. Her work on both sides of the camera gives her a unique perspective on working in the film and tv industry as a creative artist.

As a tutor she has regular and ongoing sessional work across a variety of institutions including;

VCA School of Drama at Melbourne University,
VCA School of Film and Television,
VCA Conservatorium of music/ music theatre dept
Sixteenth Street Acting Studio Melbourne,
Latrobe University
NIDA OPEN
Federation University Drama and Music Theatre(Including directing and filming showreels)
Film and TV International Studios Melbourne,
Toi Whakare New Zealand,
Royal Court theatre school London.
Outside of her work in these organisations she also engages in private coaching work for theatre, film and television, and work as a reader for casting agents.

Philosophy and Methodology
Karen’s approach is to draw from a deep well of techniques and exercises she has experienced in her own training and professional experience, as well as the unique and highly accessible exercises she has developed herself over her fifteen years teaching acting, and coaching actors of every skill level.
Her coaching is highly collaborative and tailored to the needs of the individual.
She creates a supportive learning environment that is at once challenging, engaging, straightforward, free of jargon, and playful.
Her work is focussed on discovering each individuals pathway to finding a balance between technique, craft, spontaneity, and inventiveness.
Karen is highly skilled at devising strategies that build the student’s insight ,expertise and confidence, and encourage both a creative approach to the craft, and a freedom from self-consciousness in front of the camera.
Her philosophy is that acting is a humanistic playful imaginative process which develops best through curiosity and self reliance, not stress or pretence.

Online self test and screen test feedback and guidance.
Hello everyone, and I hope you are all keeping safe and sane. I know we are all figuring out how to manage and stay safe and keep active as much as possible. So I am working out ways to work with people virtually. All my university teaching has gone on line and I am discovering new ways to work with actors and students on monologues , auditions, and self tests virtually.
This can involve zoom sessions or having the work sent to me on microsoft stream or we transfer or private you tube chanel.
I am happy to say that while never replacing the interaction and energy of a live workshop or coaching session it is working suprisingly well despite my lack of tech skills. And It has worked particularly well in regards to self testing practiceand feedback.
I am offering some free sessions and very significantly discounted ongoing rates to artists, like myself, who have most (if not all )thier work disapear due to the pandemic. T
These sessions are for those who would like to brush up on thier screen skills , update showreel, get feedback on self tests ,or work on specific speeches or any areas of interest during this downtime .
I am learning here too ,so really up for hearing any feedback or suggestions as to what might be useful to people.
Take care of yourselves and each other. Please feel free to call me if you have questions would like to discuss as there have been some issues with emai/messagesl getting through lately
Warmly Karen Davitt

Hi and thanks so much to all the people whove posted reviews and recomendations on this page. The response so far has been wonderful and id appreciate if you would keep sharing this page on your networks. The intensive workshop in march is now full, but im planning another soon. These workshops will be for a small group of six, working in pairs we will explore scenes from film, working to camera and watching the work back as a group. The aims will be to focus on both the process of preparing a scene fir camera ,and also triggering the imagination , spontanaity and sense of play within the scene , in front of the camera , and with other actors. The dates for this second workshop have not been set but they will be two weekdayd from ten till 3 and the cost will be 200 per participant. I encourage you to invite other actors along and perhaps choose a scene you wish to work on as a pair prior to the workshop, but this is not a prequesite. Please email with expressions of interest and best days for availability, and i will try to work out dates that are best for people. Thanks so much , and i look forward to working with you in the new studio.

Karen Davitt is pleased to be extending her professional teaching work at her own Northcote studio, offering classes and intensive acting workshops specializing in acting to camera for individuals, pairs or small groups. The studio is equipped with a broadcast quality camera, plus the work can be viewed and taken away on a memory card.
The camera is utilized both to extend an actors skill in negotiating the challenges of working in the professional film and TV industry (including rehearsal, performance, auditioning skills and showreels) and as a tool to explore the craft of acting itself. Karen’s private classes are ideal for working actors who want to rehearse and explore scenes, create show reels, prepare for auditions or brush up on their skills, as well as beginners looking to begin their journey or prepare auditions for drama schools.

Auditions and Screen-test preparation.
Screen-tests are a vital aspect of an actors work. Wether or not you get the particular job you are auditioning for a powerful screen-test stays in peoples minds and can open doors to future work.

Karen specializes in coaching students and professional actors in rehearsing audition scenes and preparing for screen-tests to camera.

She encourage a sense of ease in front of the camera using strategies such as “mock auditions” to demystify the process and empower the actor to do their best work in the audition room.

Screen-tests can be daunting, effective preparation is key, and working creatively can replace fear with a sense of discovery .
