Common betta fish misconceptions.
Social media is now the "go to" place for information and the sheer volume of sick and dying fish posts on the Betta groups is out of control.
These are the most common "wives tales" that are currently circulating through these groups.
1- Betta's have short life spans these days because they are so in**ed - False.
The fancy type betta splendens are genetically made up of at least 7 different betta species, many recently created colours and types were done so by outcrossing to wild type bettas and then linebreeding for desired traits. These fish are nowhere near being in**ed and genetic testing has revealed they could be linebred indefinitely with no long term problems.
Linebreeding is how every domestic animal we have today was created, every different breed of dog, cat, cow, chicken, horse, canary, fish etc are all linebred.
2- Alien Betta's are wild type - False.
Alien Betta's were created and contain the genetic material of 4 different species.
3- Lateral lines on betta fish are "stress stripes" - False.
Almost every betta is born striped and many have the ability to revert to striped form for a variety of reasons, many females will be striped their entire lives regardless of "stress".
4- Don't put salt in a betta tank as they are not Marine fish - False.
Every commercial betta fish farm uses salt as a preventative measure for illness in their water, from the moment they are laid as an egg to the day they leave the farm. They become so reliant on salt for maintaining a protective slime coat that once they are purchased and the salt additives stop they will almost definitely develop fungal and or bacterial infections.
5 - Betta's were bred to fight for hundreds of years, so now must be kept in solitary confinement- False.
The vast majority of strains available have been bred for looks now for so many generations that this no longer holds any truth.
Some of the large betta fish farms have been running for so long through multiple generations of family members and every 10 years they have moved through around 30 generations of fish.
The exception to this would be some bloodlines of fish coming from Cambodia and the Phillipines. 99% of Thai Betta's have been bred for the pet trade only.
6- Sororities don't work and are cruel - False.
Bettas are active, inquisitive fish that require mental stimulus for a long life and sororities work very well long term if the basic layout of the tank, stocking rate and conditions are met.
7- Breeding betta fish is stressful for them and shortens their lives - False.
This is a natural part of the fishes life and is extremely important for the fishes mental well being. The breeder fish at farms are often the longest lived with lifespans in excess of 7 years.
8- Flaring is stressful for the fish - False.
Flaring is crucial in maintaining healthy fins and avoiding fin nipping, fin rot and depression.
Every time a betta fish flares they pump fresh blood into their fins.
9- Betta's are solitary fish that must be kept alone - False.
There is not one place in the world where Betta's naturally occur where they are by themselves, in the wild they seek out and live side by side with a multitude of species including sparkling gourami, licorice gourami, rasboras and danios.
The quickest way I've found to kill a betta is to keep it in 100% solitary confinement and not ever let it interact with another living critter, they will eventually become listless, no longer do natural things like flare or patrol their territory and will begin to show signs of depression and eventually seem to give up on life, slowly waste away and die.
