A barber who ran to assist when independent MP Helen Haines was struck by a car outside her Wangaratta electorate office says he is no hero.
Ricky Jefferies says he got the driver out of the vehicle, took a knife from him and prevented him leaving until police arrived.
He has hailed the actions of other locals, one of whom sat in front of the vehicle while the driver was still at the wheel.
Mr Jefferies dismissed his own heroism and instead highlighted the actions of others.
"I heard a loud bang with no brakes," he said. "It was crazy. I just ran out the front to see what was happening and I saw amazing members of the Wangaratta community who I know, or know most of them, and they were helping".
This man's actions and humility makes me so proud to be an Australian. Let's have more Rickys, less Donnies......
