There’s not much subtlety in a Demo Derby win.

By the time the chequered flag comes out, most of the field has already been turned into scrap.

This was the last one standing.
Smoke everywhere, cars destroyed around him, and the winner up on top claiming it.

Not everything at Speedway needs to be pretty.

One of the best things about my time with the Ninety Nine was the freedom to capture.

I didn’t always have to make sure every sponsor was readable or every part of the car was perfectly presented. I could push things a little further and just chase the photograph.

For years I’d loved shooting Sprintcars from this angle because of how much attitude there is in it. You don’t need to see the whole car. You just need the stance, the dirt, the light and that feeling that the thing is absolutely angry.

And with the 99, I knew I could shoot it that way.

Fast. Angry. Half buried in the racetrack.

Not necessarily the shot every team would want.

But definitely the kind of shot I wanted to make...

FROM THE ARCHIVE // 2006

There’s a fair bit of Sprintcar history sitting in this frame.

The World of Outlaws in Sydney at Parramatta City Raceway, one of only a handful of times the series made it down under, and a pretty bloody big deal at the time.

Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Danny Lasoski, Joey Saldana, Jason Sides, Kraig Kinser, Brian Brown… just some of the names rolling out for driver introductions.

Everyone was looking towards the crowd.

I stood on the other side.

Twenty years later, I’m pretty glad I did.

Two of the greatest to ever do it, Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell, sitting right there amongst a lineup that was absolutely stacked.

Back then it was just another frame from a massive night at Parramatta.

Now it feels like a little piece of Speedway history...

A helmet, an eye, a couple of bars and just enough of a gap to make it work.

I could’ve moved for a cleaner shot, but clean wasn’t really the point. I liked the layers, the clutter and having to look through the cars to find him...

Sometimes speedway is literally just dirt.

But a lot of the time we forget that’s what this great sport is actually run on.

So get down low, find the light, throw the background away, even if there is a Sprintcar rolling through it, and there’s still a photograph sitting there.

Every little part of this sport is what makes the whole thing so bloody good...

Sometimes it was just standing back in the pits, watching Carson Macedo and the Dyson Motorsports crew go about it, and waiting for everything in the frame to line up.
