Bangarra Dance Theatre is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Uncle Noel Tovey AM, a trailblazing artist, cultural leader, and Australia’s first male Aboriginal ballet dancer.

Uncle Noel’s life was one of extraordinary resilience, talent, and advocacy. From breaking barriers on the ballet stage to championing the rights and visibility of First Nations and LGBTQIA+ communities, Mr Tovey redefined representation for First Nations artists on national and global stages.

By directing landmark productions such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with an all-Aboriginal cast for the Sydney Olympics, and serving on boards and committees championing Indigenous artistic voices, he elevated First Nations stories to international acclaim. We honour his legacy, his generosity of spirit, and his contribution to the ongoing story of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the arts.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by his work and wisdom.

May you rest in peace, Uncle Noel.
