Due to some retirements from our Board, Manapan recently appointed a couple of new Directors.
We are proud to announce Elizabeth Ganygulpa as our first Female Yolngu Director.

Ganygulpa has been a proud follower and advocate of the Manapan Story since our inception. Ganygulpa has a strong connection to Manapan as her son Jason was one of our first Yolngu Craftsmen.

She is excited to begin working towards guiding more Yolngu into the Manapan workshop.

The 2nd of February 2022 is a special day for Manapan.
Today is the 5th Anniversary of the day Manapan was created.
Evolving out of the old Milingimbi Furniture, Manapan has achieved so much in its first 5 years. From Milingimbi to Milan, Manapan pieces have now found homes across Australia and the world. There are Manapan pieces in New Zealand, Croatia, Italy, Singapore and the USA.

Here's to many more years of providing employment and training opportunities in Arnhem Land.

Happy Birthday Manapan

2021 - Reflections

Last year was a year not without its challenges, but the entire team from Manapan worked hard to deliver outstanding pieces across Australia.

2021 saw us deliver Manapan pieces to almost every mainland state of Australia. From our exquisite Linear units in NSW, Fossil coffee tables in Brisbane, custom tables to Darwin, A centrepiece boardroom table to Melbourne, Croc lamps to Adelaide and Canberra. We even completed an outfitting of the EARC Post office on Milingimbi.

Under the watchful eyes of our Master Craftsmen. Our Yolngu team, led by Josiah Baker continue to produce existing and custom design work that receive positive responses and impressions from their new owners.

As we move into 2022 Manapan is already working hard producing custom pieces and designs for local, national and international clients.

2022 will be an exciting new chapter for 'The Manapan Story

Proud Manapan Family

Our Lead Yolngu Craftsmen Josiah Baker was on hand for his son Baker Boy to be presented with his Order of Australia Medal.

Manymuk!

Baker Boy presented with the Order of Australia Medal 🙌❤️

Congrats, Baker Boy! He received the award this week alongside his Dad and Uncle from Milingimbi and Darwin, and his partner Aurie.

"I want to show that kid in community who has huge dreams that they can do it. They can make it, and even more, that they have the power to create change.

"They have the power to create conversations, to tell their stories and speak their truths."

What an icon!

TEAMWORK

To keep producing outstanding pieces it takes all the talents of our craftsmen. Dawson and Josiah recently worked together on their first finished Leather piece. After one trial, they nailed an outstanding finish on their second effort.

It is interesting to see our team members developing different skill sets that compliment each other.

The Story

Manapan is located 500kms East of Darwin on Milingimbi Island in Arnhem Land and is one of six islands that form an archipelago known as the “Crocodile Island’s”. It encompasses an area of thirteen by seven kilometers square of which most is low lying sandy beaches and tidal mud flats lined with mangroves and Tamarind trees. The name Milingimbi comes from the name of the lightning snake that lives within the sacred well; the well that gave life by supplying the islands inhabitants with fresh water. Because the well was named “Milingimbi”, so too was the island.

The traditional custodians of Arnhem Land are the Yolngu people (pronounced yon-gu) who have lived here for over 50,000 years and have a deep connection, respect and understanding of the land. They say that since their creation and dreaming, they have lived by their ancestral stories with each clan connected to its own tribal country, own ancestral stories, own songs, own ceremonies, own paintings and its own spiritual rights but yet still connected to neighboring clans through their shared responsibility of caring for the land and upholding Yolngu rom (Aboriginal Law).

Manapan is a self-sufficient, self-funded enterprise which is owned and operated by the Yolngu people and is backed by ALPA, the largest employer of Aboriginal people in Australia. It receives great support from the local school with work experience programs and also from the ALPA Community Development Program who train the local people in the carpentry and joinery skills.

The timbers used to create the pieces are a mixture of locally sourced timbers that fell over during cyclone Lam in 2015, timber from Gumatj Aboriginal Corporation in Nhulunbuy and are complimented with a mixture of sustainably harvested specialty Australian timbers.

It was wonderful to open WINYA's new showroom last week on Cavenagh Street. WINYA showcased some Australian Indigenous furniture with special features from Manapan Furniture. WINYA is an aboriginal owned furniture supplier who has worked with HPA for several years. Welcome to the CBD!
We are so excited to announce the offical opening of our new Winya Darwin showroom! Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week - a time for Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year's theme "In this together" is now resonating in ways nobody could have foreseen when the theme was announced last year, but it reminds us whether in a crisis or in reconciliation we are all #InThisTogether. When we open our museum at the Darwin Waterfront again, please make sure you check out our shop that features art and craft made by amazing Indigenous artists and local small businesses like Manapan Furniture. #LocalsSupportingLocals - we can't wait to see you soon! ✈️💕
Check out the great work done by our friends down the road! The crew at Manapan Furniture have just finished building a Reception Desk for Austrade's new office in #Sydney! We couldn't be more #milingimbiproud 😀
Bought this beautful phone stand in October last year. I use it everyday at work and it is such a great way to add some colour to my dull office.
It's always exciting to see one of our businesses making positive strides. Manapan Furniture recently had one of their pieces procured by the Art Gallery of South Australia. Now on display. WOVEN CHLOE CABINET Chloe Walbran has elevated the art of the Milingimbi community with her Art Cabinet. Combining her skills and talent, the Woven Cabinet almost becomes recessive to the woven textiles from the Indigenous artisans. Originating from plants such as the Pandanus Spirifis, or screw palm, the youngest branches are stripped of their prickly edges and the fibres dried out in the sun to form the material for this exquisite textile. “I have always been drawn to textiles. What a great opportunity to combine this love with creating furniture, my other passion,” says Chloe, who applied the woven textiles created by the Milingimbi community to the cabinet, made from Darwin Stringybark. “I saw the timber like the frame of a canvas, stretching it across the cabinet’s two doors.” Inside the Woven Cabinet are two adjustable timber shelves, also made from Darwin Stringybark, and placed against a bronze mirrored wall. Shelf-supporting timber plugs can be twisted when not in use and placed flush with the interior lining to create a seamless effect. #milingimbi
