#MACcontemporary: “Make visible what, without you, might perhaps never have been seen.” – This quote comes from celebrated French filmmaker Robert Bresson (1901-1999), who made films like Diary of a Country Priest (1951) and Au Hasard Balthazar (1966). Bresson beautifully captured small moments like touches and glances. His works remain profound viewing experiences after all these years owing to his poetic attention to detail.

#MAChistorical: Included in the collection of the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, “Allegory of Fortune” (1530) by Italian painter Giovanni di Niccolò de Lutero (1490-1542) or Dosso Dossi is a work of rich symbolism, most likely commissioned by Isabella d'Este, Marchioness of Mantua (1474-1539). The lady here is “Luck” and the man is “Chance”.

Luck holds a bounty of fruits but is seated on a large bubble, indicating her precariousness. Her billowing fabric and single shoe also stand for the inconsistent nature of her favours. Chance holds a bunch of tickets, a reference to the civic lotteries that were popular in Italy at the time—another representation of unpredictability and instability. It is said the painting was inspired by patron Isabella d'Este's own experiences of fluctuations in wealth.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“With painting I like to keep the ingredients motiveless and find a state of suspension. Style and content seem best when they arrive by default. I find myself pushing things so I can enjoy the
incredulity of having certain anomalies all coexisting on a canvas. I don’t know how it will turn out - often the most interesting things happen when a picture reaches a point of hopeless
coagulation, then things have to be disowned, indiscriminately erased, or painted over, something has to jump forward or back under the surface. Uncontrol helps control.” - David Palliser

#MACcontemporary: The unfolding of time and space, our experience of reality—these happen to be the regular themes of Berlin-based Polish artist Alicja Kwade (born 1979). Drawing upon science and philosophy, simple yet grand—often playing with values of scale—her sculptures and installations use materials like mirrors, rocks, empty black frames, globes and clocks.

Planets of the solar system are placed here and there to encourage the viewer to contextualise their own existence within the vastness of the universe. Rocks are kept next to each other—separated by mirrors—appearing as if one is morphing into another as the viewer moves, making them question their perception of things.

#MAChistorical: Mixing history with legend, “the Alexander Romance” is a narrative—available in different versions—on the adventures of Alexander the Great (356 BC – 323 BC), ruler of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. The main source of the Romance is an epic written in Greek by a Hellenised Egyptian in Alexandria during the 2nd century AD. Alexander’s court historian Callisthenes is also sometimes considered an author but as he died before Alexander, his contribution is disputed and certain works are instead attributed to an identity named “Pseudo-Callisthenes”.

In the middle ages, the romance was translated into many languages—Coptic, Ge'ez, Byzantine Greek, Arabic, Persian, Armenian, Syriac, Hebrew and European vernaculars. With wide circulation, it became the subject of several illuminated manuscripts. In these four illustrations, Alexander is seen in a diving bell (a rigid submarine-type chamber used for performing underwater work), fighting two-headed dragons, being carried by griffins and having a wall built against the supposedly cannibalistic peoples “Gog” and “Magog” (names from the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament).

#MACcontemporary: “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have,” said American author and activist Maya Angelou (1928-2014). She is best known for her seven autobiographies, the first of which is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), chronicling her difficult childhood, experiences of racism, trauma and belief in the power of literature. Before achieving success and fame, Angelou worked several odd jobs, among them roles in the media, conference co-ordinator, cook, nightclub performer and s*x worker.

#MAChistorical: “Empty canvas. In appearance - really empty, silent, indifferent. Stunned, almost. In effect - full of tensions, with thousand subdued voices, heavy with expectations. A little frightened because it may be violated,” wrote Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), the Russian pioneer of abstraction. Here is his “Composition VIII” (1923).

#MACcontemporary: "There are a significant number of situations where the limitations of our waking logic and preconceptions keep us stuck on a problem. And a dream can solve it," says Harvard psychologist Deirdre Barrett, whose career has been dedicated to collecting experiential data on dreaming, which is by its nature subjective and self-reported. “Investigating the rare dreams that appear to solve objective problems is especially challenging,” she continues. “I combed biographies and history books and found hundreds of examples of dreams contributing to science, the arts, and world decisions. I also interviewed modern creative dreamers and uncovered current examples of the phenomenon.”

Most dreams occur during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep, when certain parts of the brain—associated with logic, social appropriateness, and more—are especially active and can give insights into problems. Barrett proposes steps by which we can “incubate a dream” to allow it to offer creative solutions:

1. Write down the problem as a brief phrase on a notepad and place the notepad by the bed. You can also arrange related objects where you can see them from the bed.

2.Review the problem for a few minutes just before bedtime.

3.Once in bed, visualize the problem as a concrete image if possible.

4. As you drift off to sleep, tell yourself you want to dream about the problem. Visualize yourself dreaming about the problem, awakening, and writing on the notepad.

5. Upon awakening, lie quietly in bed and note whether there is any trace of a recalled dream, inviting more of the dream to return if possible. Write it down.

Hi there. I missed out on a spot in Hilmi's intro to drawing course, will there be a further term of this course this year? And if so, when can I enrol?
When will your next Painting with still lives class begin please?
Hi there, I'm not sure who the best person to talk to about this is – please let me know if there's someone I should direct this to specifically. I'm on the content team at Eventfinda where Melbourne Art Class is one of the most popular venues we have listed in Melbourne. We've got several upcoming user-submitted Eventfinda listings for Melbourne Art Class and lots of past events, but I can see the venue listing hasn't been claimed by one of your staff. By claiming your venue page you're able to easily make changes to any of the information we publish about your venue. You can update the venue description and images at any time, as well as get notifications of any events at your venue submitted by Eventfinda users so you can make sure they're accurate. It's easy and completely free. To claim your venue, simply view your listing here: http://www.eventfinda.com.au/venue/melbourne-art-class You'll find a grey box under the comment section, reading 'Are you responsible for Melbourne Art Class?' and the option to 'Claim it’. The Eventfinda website gets over 150,000 monthly visits from Melbourne and we want to make sure the information we have displayed on the site for both your upcoming events and the general venue information is correct. If you have any questions I'm happy to help. Kind regards, Casey Radley __________________________________ Content & Advertising 1800 710 499 [email protected] | eventfinda.com.au
