Brazilian Maxixe

Let’s dance a maxixe?

I am so excited creating a dance based on maxixe.

But how did Maxixe come about?
It was created from the dances of Afro-descendants.
As well as the vast majority of other typically Brazilian dances.
It was at the beginning of the 19th century that Rio de Janeiro observed and witnessed the emergence of a dance that would later be known as Tango Brasileiro.
That’s how the Maxixe we know today was born.
To give you an idea, until the emergence of what we know today as Samba, Maxixe was the most famous ballroom dance at the time.
We can say that its decline began around the 20th century.
But it is still widely used in the most traditional ballroom dance houses throughout Brazil.
Mainly because of the immersive rhythm it has.
Thus, Maxixe was very successful for at least 100 years.
Being even one of the precursors of Samba.
But of course, with the influence of other rhythms, both external and specifically Brazilian.

One of the greatest things I did during lockdown was doing percussion classes from Salvador with an amazing percussionist. We were meant to do 7 lessons, instead I did almost 8 months of classes.
A bonus was his wife, nothing less than the daughter of Neguinho do Samba. Here, she was teaching me the techniques from ilê Ayiê, it was such a surprise to me to know in a few classes they were musicians and dancers from Olodum, Didá, Ilê Aiyê.
An amazing treat to be given percussion and dance classes direct from Salvador with the best!
Maybe one day they can come here and teach some amazing workshops.
I feel extremely blessed. ♥️

African series. Take a bow.

Let's say goodbye to such an unexpected year. The year of 2020. A number 4. A year 4 was sure to bring us the unexpected.Twists and turns we are here and hoping for a cure to our uncertainties and afflictions. We want souls healed. We want to heal ourselves from whatever it may be.
Time to bow our heads to the divine and say thanks we are here learning from pain and going deep within.

Hand symbols.
Symbolysm and orixá culture go hand in hand. There is a language in rituals as well as in dance related to the hands. There is great power in hand symbols and a deeper connection to the orixá energy.
The lack of understanding of these symbols leaves the work looking shallow and without meaning. Dance is not only about learning steps. It is about a great understanding of the ancestral symbols and spiritual meaning when these energies are in contact with a physical body.
This is why I always teach symbolism to my students as part of my classes. A very important aspect.

Winners are grinners!!! 🤩 Samba Iansã, in collaboration with Xango Capoeira Melbourne , won the Best Community Multicultural Talent award last night, at the Festival of Talents organised by ACTap - Australia Community Theatre & Talents Practitioners Inc. 🏆 This 5-piece act was our debut joint #performance representing multiple sides of the #afrobrazilian culture: #afrosamba , #maculele, #samba and #capoeira 😎 We are extremely grateful to Fabiana Ballet Folklorico Fabiana Grimaldi for the nomination 🙏 More photos and videos coming soon, stay tuned! 💃 @ Williamstown Town Hall
I felt truly blessed by Fabiana's class. I always feel drawn into Afro Brazilian culture but during her class, I was able to discover my body and soul connected to the Orishas. During the workshop to celebrate Yemanjá, the Orisha of Water, I experimented the collective effervescence, feeling the sensation of sacredness that happens when we are part of something bigger than us, feeling connected to the group and to the Orishas. Fabiana's knowledge goes beyond providing the background of the origin of each movement and its connection and meaning in the Afro dance. She uses movement to heal the mind, body and soul. The day after the class I woke up with clarity of thoughts and creative ideas. Ironically, I had to leave Brazil to find out how connected my soul is to this part of my culture.
Brand new song from Daniela!!!
