Stills of the beautiful brolga paper sculptures by Year 3. We listened to a couple of Aboriginal Dreamtime stories about the brolga, and learnt about its significance to Aboriginal culture in the Northern Territory. They chose a template shape for their brolga, added wings and decorated patterns in black and white fine line markers. This activity is from a workshop I did a number of years ago with Michele Jones from Gardenvale Primary school where she shared some brilliant ideas for exploring Indigenous perspectives with students. ( I don’t know why I hadn’t done this activity with before now; they turned out so beautifully).

Year 1s have been learning about art forms from ancient Mesopotamia where clay tablets were used to scribe stories and everyday things like accounts of stock or animals. Students used a reference sheet to scribe symbols onto a small ‘tablet’ of clay in ‘cuneiform’ - one of the oldest known writing systems.

Colourful shapes and patterns created by Year 4, inspired by Reggie Laurent’s artwork. Reginald Laurent . They started by cutting out organic and geometric shapes and fitting them onto black paper with small gaps in-between. Paint pens were used to add patterns to each shape.

Greek pots (amphoras) on Greek columns. Year 3 have been looking at Ancient Greek art and architecture. Using symmetry, students folded paper and drew half the pot for the shape, oil pastels and black paint to enable scratch art designs on the pots in Greek patterns, and ionic style columns for their pot to stand on!
