Melbourne has been branded the arts capital of Australia, and for good reason.
Delighted to have joined the Mona Foma team as Creative Producers for the Fantastic Futures program at Mona’s summer festival of art, music, and other stuff in Launceston.
The decommissioned shell of the old Launceston Tafe—a place that once promised ‘Fantastic Futures’— will become an exhibition of genuine and manufactured 'coming-togetherness'.
Thoughfully curated by MONA - Museum of Old and New Art Senior Curator, Emma Pike the 2023 program features a mix of art, film, performance, experiment, motion, music and more.
Plus - we’re rolling up our sleeves designing the visitor experience across the old TAFE, in feature spaces such as the Punker Bunker, Garage Bar, Main Stage and the inners of this great big building.
Thank you so much for the connect Laura Imbruglia . Its wonderful to work with you again, plus yet another bunch of awesome creatives. 🧡
Free to attend

This image is a beautiful capture of Archie Roach and Uncle Jack Charles - two of the most humble, kind men I have had the pleasure to work with - taken at Archie’s induction in the the Victorian Music Awards. A very memorable moment of my producing career, and life.
Mostly, a shining moment for two shining stars.
Standing side of stage, I recall Uncle Jack telling me before he went on to induct Archie, of his love for his mate and many of their many life stories both happy and devastating, and his personal honour to have returned from filming for the show, after being cast in Cleverman.
A beautiful soul with a twinkle in his eye, and the most dedicated of advocates and eloquent of storytellers.
We love you and hear you and may your legacy and advocacy live on through all of us. We will miss you both on the streets of Fitzroy.
🖤💛❤️

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island readers are warned that this image contains and mentions the deceased: Uncle Jack Charles’ family have given permission to use his name and image.
Thank you to the incredible people who connected me to everything and everyone whilst I was in the UK and Europe (and to my amazing friends for the evenings and weekends) 🤍
How grateful I am to travel and feel invigorated and inspired after a tough few years.
Big thanks to my incredible crew who represented in human form whilst I was virtual across the zones.
They tell me I should do reels, so a couple to shortly follow - mainly to impress the crew I can do them - but for you to enjoy a snippet too.

Presented across the exterior and interior of the underpass at Nowa Nowa - a collaborative work by Alice Pepper and visiting artist Meggs.
The combined practices of each artist intrinsically thread, weave and connect the beautiful story of GunaiKurnai at Nowa Nowa.
On the south entry, a Welcome to Country - a woman and man wear possum skins cloaks as a young boy plays the clapsticks. A smoking ceremony in the Coolamon with gum leaves gently drifts to lead you into the tunnel.
Throughout the tunnel are references to gathering as well as the inclusion of four floating feathers: Borun (Pelican), Tuk (Musk Duck) -the mother & father creators and Djeetgung & Yeering (superb fairy & Emu Wren) - the male & female Totems of the GunaiKurnai people.
Throughout the tunnel, the colour palette of land and sky and also the hands on the rocks, representing ancestors that have walked for many thousands of years before us.
The North entry features Lomandra, a grass-like plant local to the area, used for weaving baskets for fishing - a traditional method passed down from ancestors.

With a distinct focus on native Flora, the installation at the Orbost Butter Factory is a reflection of time spent on GunaiKurnai Country by .
Spending time throughout Gippsland and the Lakes area it’s impossible to escape just how beautiful the landscape is - Lush greens, Banksias, the Snowy River streams and rolling hills contrasting with the burnt reminders of recent bushfires.
As a bookend for the East Gippsland Rail Trail it was important to ensure this was represented in the finished piece and that the mural worked within the existing landscape, complimenting it and providing a preview of things to be seen and experienced on the trail.
To achieve this LING worked with Shanh from , a Melbourne based indigenous florist, to produce an arrangement which was subsequently photographed and is represented in the final painting.
“Hopefully this creates further interest in the Orbost area and provides an additional highlight for the East Gippsland Rail Trail.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in this project. It’s been amazing to seeing the positive attitudes and collaborative spirit that has driven it, and a pleasure to be involved” LING

Under the Surface | Patricia Pittman
A rail trail favourite view point is Nicholson Foot Bridge. Featured at the entrance of this large structure is the incredible work of local artist Patricia Pittman.
The Gunaikurnai see land, water, air and every living thing as one. Patricia’s work depicts a story of the Brabawooloong ancestors' journey along the flowing river, using natural tones and symbols to represent the elders, native fish and landscape.
Visiting artist, Minna Luenig assisted Patricia onsite, providing both the opportunity to share knowledge and giving Minna insight into cultural storytelling.
Patricia often takes inspiration from childhood memories and her family’s totems. Incorporating the land and sea creatures of her south coast upbringing into her work. Her practice focuses on the native environment in order to visually story tell, connect and grow human relationships with the land through art. This vibrant mural highlights Patricia’s distinct style and intricate artistry.

Minna Leunig
Specialising in the visual language of symbols, Geelong based artist, Minna Leunig covered Partellis Crossing in her beautiful signature bold silhouettes.
Brought up in rural Victoria, surrounded by bushland and animals, Minna has a profound love and respect for the Australian landscape and all its life forms. Her work often pays homage to these plants and animals, seeking to illustrate them as unique species and individuals.
This mural highlights stories and references from surrounding rivers that run through Nowa Nowa to Lake Tyers relating to fish and water as vital elements of life, community and culture. Minna's choice of colour for the mural is a stark contrast to its surroundings, which she describes as ‘lively and striking’ -“the idea is that the building itself becomes the artwork”.

UNDER THE SURFACE
GUNAIKURNAI COUNTRY/EAST GIPPSLAND
This past fortnight, a fabulous team of artists have collaborated on East Gippsland’s inaugural multi-dimensional public art experience, ‘Under the Surface’ along the East Gippsland Rail Trail - which runs from Bairnsdale to Orbost.
From 2020 (in between lockdowns), we conducted onsite research, engaged key community members and groups, and collaborated to design and curate the pilot project aiming to better inform travelling artists of their subject matter and the land on which they stand.
Through a cultural awareness program with the local Gunaikurnai artist collective and community, the visiting artists developed learnings on artistic practices, storytelling, introduction to the local environment and an understanding of land management and preservation.
Local artists Alice Pepper and Patricia Pittman were joined by visiting artists David “MEGGS” Hooke, Ling and Minna Leunig in solo and collaborative works led by the story of the Gunaikurnai community.
