City Revitalisation Event Support Program - City of Melbourne

Melbourne’s 2023 events calendar will be bolstered with a series of unmissable festivals, events and experiences, thanks to the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government News’s $5 million City Revitalisation Event Support Program (CRESP).

The program will help to deliver a uniquely Melbourne line-up of free and ticketed events, festivals and experiences – which is expected to draw more than 1.2 million punters to the city.

Another set of cuts that will have a meaningful impact on the Melbourne arts scene: Monash Uni Music course cuts to Musicology/Ethnomusicology

These incoming cuts that have recently been decided by Monash uni are sadly not isolated cuts, however they are going to meaningfully effect the multifaceted musical fabric of Melbourne (and not merely in a research capacity). The Musicology / Ethnomusicology are particular strengths and focuses within the Music Department of Monash Uni and are elements that help distinguish that department from some other tertiary music department in Victoria.

Similar to my recent post about the imminent complete shutdown of the Theatre course at Monash, I believe that it is very important to maintain these courses at least as they were (as they had already had minor cutbacks going back a few years) as the pending cuts will have an effect not just on the breadth and quality of what Monash University offers but also will directly effect the careers and lives of current and future students and staff as well as have a further impact on the Australian performing arts scene at a time when it is already being massively hit.

I feel for everyone everywhere as everyone is doing it tough and their are travesties everywhere, but I think it is important to try to help preserve these aspects of Australian cultural that are increasingly in danger of remaining reduced (and in some cases possibly extinguished) forever. While I can't know this for sure, both these and the Theatre course cuts appear to not be ones that are imperative to be made, and while I'm prepared to be wrong on this front (and if so I would publically acknowledge this) I think that regardless every effort has to be made to restore these courses, subjects and jobs!

I implore everyone to also sign this petition.

Hi I am in search of a 1992 single called ‘Lowdown’ by Adore. The group was from Victoria.
The sudden news that Monash University is going to close the theatre course (with the vast majority of staff going to be unemployed in a matter of weeks) is an absolute travesty!! (Apparently a similar thing is happening at Sydney University) It's not just a travesty for those currently working or studying theatre at Monash but also directly so to the theatre world, and to future young artists (who will now be deprived of valuable opportunities and education via the course).

As if the performing arts scene hasn't been hit hard enough already due to this pandemic (from which it will take years to recover and may never fully recover)...this move will also have a flow-on effect for the live music and dance scenes, so implore everyone to sign this petition!!!

The course at Monash is operating so well and is a truly unique theatre course in Australia, with elements of offstage theatre roles and valuable research being more prominent in it than in the few other theatre courses, even though the full theatre degree (entitled Performing Arts Degree, which I graduated from in 2010 over and above my music degreea) was formally ended a few years ago with the course become a major of a general Arts degree.

Even if one doesn't attend live theatre much, it is imperative that we preserve this part of our culture as we all benefit from it in so many ways (for example through the graduates who go on to the television / film industry and many other industries) and we are now in real danger of loosing this and other Australian performing arts industries in time through events and actions that are occurring now.

My heart goes out to everyone directly involved, the dedicated current students and the wonderful staff who have made Monash theatre such a rich and unique place to be and study.

Please help with this and related petitions to help save this course and countless careers!!!
