10 Years. 10 Books.

Books that have inspired me, challenged my thinking and encouraged artistic and personal exploration.

JL Studio. A dojo for long-form actor training. A place for practice, discovery and continual artistic growth.

Hold yourself up to the light. 💡

Another wonderful Sunday night class.

Tender hearts and a hunger for artistic growth. A very good combination.

Today officially marks the 10-year anniversary of Justin Lehmann Studio.

Time flies.

Ten years ago, I made the scary decision to step outside my comfort zone and create something of my own. I wanted greater autonomy, independence and the freedom to teach the work in a way I truly believed in.

These photos are from my very first class on 19 October 2016. The original sign outside the classroom and the group of actors who joined me on that first day.

What started as a small class in Melbourne has grown into a studio that now offers training and workshops across Australia.

It’s been an incredible journey, filled with challenges, growth and invaluable experiences along the way.

I’m deeply grateful to every actor who has walked through the doors and trusted me with their training.

Here’s to 10 years of JL Studio and the work still to come.✨

A wonderful day in Sydney exploring the Meisner Technique.

One of the great joys of teaching this work is revealing what Meisner Repetition really is and seeing people’s faces light up as they begin to understand it in a whole new way.

Thank you to everyone who came along and to .hubstudio for bringing it all together.

Looking forward to coming back soon.✨

Sydney Meisner Workshop

Saturday 17th October.

Robert Duvall on simplicity, improvisation, talking and listening.

Duvall trained with Sanford Meisner, whose work was grounded in simplicity.

Meisner trained the actor to get out of their head, to really listen, to respond, to improvise and to allow the work to happen moment to moment.

Simple principles. But they take serious training.

Learning how to actively listen is critical to the craft of acting.

If you can’t listen, you aren’t truly available to what your partner is giving you. You aren’t present.

If you want to learn what it means to truly listen, come and experience the genius of the Meisner Technique.

Nicole Kidman on listening.

You can have ideas, but when the work begins, you have to be available to what is actually happening in front of you.

Listen. Respond. Let something happen that you couldn’t have planned.

This is at the heart of the work we train at JL Studio.
