VALE DR JANE BIRD

The Committee of Management, operations team, members and friends of Drama Victoria are deeply saddened with the news that Dr Jane Bird passed away during the night of 9th June. Jane died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a long illness.

Jane was a lecturer in drama education in Artistic and Creative Education and Head of Drama Education, at The University of Melbourne. She lectured in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies of Drama Education. Jane was the co-author of the VCE student textbook series Acting Smart for both Drama and Theatre Studies that are in their eighth edition.

Jane had ongoing relationships with the VCAA in various roles for Drama and Theatre Studies. Jane taught in a range of secondary schools, both government and independent, for over fifteen years.

Jane’s research focused on creative and innovative approaches to education and research methodology including artistic and embodied pedagogies as well as research-based theatre.

Jane was one of our LEGENDS and will be dearly missed. You may like to hear from the LEGEND herself. This interview was recorded with Jane at the Drama Victoria Conference in 2017 as part of the MAMA (Memories And Memorials Archive) interviews project. Thanks to Robyn Kay who recorded this interview on behalf of Drama Victoria and Drama Australia and thanks to Nick Waxman for uploading this interview onto The Aside podcast:

Thoughts and deep sympathy go out to Jane’s beloved children Hannah and Asher, her sisters Anne and Sue, her brother Ross and their families and partners over this incredibly difficult time.

Jane’s funeral will be held at 10am on Friday, 17th June at:
Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 193 Hotham Street, East Melbourne.

The 2022 Conference Survey has now ended. 237 people responded which is awesome! Thank you to everyone who participated. Your feedback has been so valuable.

So here are the results:
* 60% in favour of a two day F2F Conference vs 40% in favour of Day 1 being F2F with Day 2 online - we will go with a two day F2F Conference.
* What's useful to you online? - 25% prefer real time access (live streaming) vs 75% who prefer recordings that can be watched in their own time - thus we will not live stream but rather look at pre-records and recording specific streams. Won't know the answer until we receive Expression of Interest from presenters.
* How would you like to receive promo material from Drama Vic? - Email: 209 YES responses, Facebook: 56 YES responses (Instagram and eNews hardly rated) So we will discontinue eNews and concentrate our efforts on "to the point" emails.

And the winner of the FREE 2 day Conference Pass is.......George Arthur - Catholic Regional College Sydenham. Congratulations, George!

The team at Drama Victoria can't wait to see you all end of November for our two day F2F Conference! Yeah!

With sincere thanks and warmest wishes,

Please and thank you so very much to anyone who shares - Could you please please give me some ideas for what you are doing for year 12 Drama commencement, would anyone mind sharing their documents/packs? It is my first time having a commencement class and I keep second guessing myself!! I don't know how much holiday homework I should set, should I give them their ensemble stimulus now? or focus on written for half and performance for half! SO MANY POSSIBILITIES! I have 2 double sessions booked for commencement and 10000 ideas but would love your guidance and some to look at please please please. Happy to share mine after it is done and my stimulus "superstition".

Hello Drama Victorians! Do you work with young BIPOC students? If so, I've got lots of great things for you! I run a program called Stage A Change, helping to promote more professional theatre opportunities for aspiring performers of colour. And there are some AMAZING things going on in the commerical theatre sector that I'd love for your students to take advantage of! This Friday at 8pm, we'll be going live on our page with the first episode of "The Show" a chat with industry insiders to discuss diversity, inclusion and action. We'd love for you to follow and join us. BeYou, INC has gathered funding to pay for over ONE HUNDRED young students to apply to drama schools nationwide! If you are the educator of a young person who could use the financial help to just get in the door, please reach out to Be You Inc AOC Initiative has created a scholarship program for an aspiring young artist of colour. To enter visit their site - they are giving away several different tiers of prize money to be used to continue training in theatre. They have raised over $7500 so far and are planning to give away at least 4 scholarships. The People of Cabaret is an organisation working hard to create a database of creatives who are people of colour. If your school is looking for a virtual class in anything, especially if you teach in a school that is predominately BIPOC, they are a great starting off point to connect with theatre professionals of colour. They are also compiling a list of open auditions, which would be great for any year 12s who are ready or interested in auditioning in the professional world. I have a few other opportunities in my inbox, specific to costuming, theatre admin and am happy to put a call out in my network if you have any other students interested in other things!
Does anyone have an electronic copy of acting smart theatre studies version 8 which I may use for an assignment? Cheers my dears
Hey guys wanting some advice if it's acceptable to make some cuts to A midsummer night's dream for a unit 3 theatre studies performance for Outcome 1. As much as I love Shakespeare it's so long and as I've never edited a script before like this so I'm unsure how to proceed. My guess would be longer scenes like act 3 scene 2 and act 5 but I'd love some feedback. Cheers
Hi guys calling on anyone who has performed Shakespeare's a midsummer nights dream. Where would be appropriate places to make a few cuts for a VCE Theatre Studies unit 3 class? This is for an assignment for my degree, it occurs to me that this play while awesome is rather long, would it really be acceptable for students to perform the play in it's entirety? My current thought is sections in act 3 scene 2 and Act 5 but I'd appreciate peoples thoughts. Cheers
A great article via ArtsHub about Australian Theatre for young audiences in the time of Coronavirus. Hopefully, all can access.

Many teachers are expressing concern over their upcoming performances, and whether they can actually go ahead in the current climate with COVID-19. In order for the show to go on, there are alternatives to holding the performances before a live audience. Have you considered filming your school production? There are alternatives out there.... Thinking of all you wonderful drama teachers in these tough times. Costumes without Drama are here to help.
