Thank you to everyone that came to see MU Modern’s first shows in 2019! We have come along way since starting up, and are excited for another year of theatre.

MU Modern is pleased to announce that our next show, to be staged on the 29th April-2nd May, will be Arcadia by Tom Stoppard.

Winner of the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play in 1993, Arcadia stretches time, art, academia, pontificating snobs, s*x, debauchery, and love. It makes for a remarkably astute commentaty about all these things, but at its core, Arcadia is a classic Stoppardian comedy, one that interrogates the relationship between past and present, truth and fiction.

We’ll be opening applications for lead production roles tomorrow, so stay tuned for that! General production call-out and Auditions will follow not long after. We're looking forward to putting together another wonderful team of theatrical minds, and reviving this great work for you.

It’s closing night! Make sure to get your tickets now or risk missing out (or turning into a bug)!

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce our directors.

Alison Ford
Unlike Gregor, I would voluntarily stay locked in a room with just my imagination for company for stretches at a time. When I do emerge from it (I have to if I want to be involved in theatre!), I do feel butterflies in the stomach with the excitement of creation but in all my (admittedly few) years of living I’ve yet to experience that metamorphosis into a social butterfly. But maybe, I don’t want to become an insect, maybe I’m fine being a human with six legs, a thorax, a couple of antennae…wait I mean two legs, two arms, a torso- or do I?

Jacob Kuek
I am in Melbourne studying a BSci in Psychology. I have taken every opportunity to be a part of the performing arts. I have performed in musicals with UMMTA, am a backing vocalist for Broadway Unplugged, and do improv regularly at the Improv Conspiracy. Normally a performer, I have assisted with the direction for MU Modern Theatre's "The Flick" and have leaped at the opportunity to get stuck into more directing. A late addition to the Metamorphosis team, I am very excited to put on the show and I hope the audience loves it as much as I do!

MU Modern is proud to announce that James Macaronas will be adapting The Metamorphosis for our september production at Fringe.

James Macaronas is a writer and performer whose work is characterized by its open engagement with ‘weird’ aesthetics and genre traditions. Previous work includes writing ‘The Apocalypse Tapes’, presented by FLW Theatre at Mudfest, 2017, and directing ‘MindQuest: Journey into Forever’, presented by the Mudcrabs at Melbourne Fringe, 2018. This year, he wrote and performed ‘Kirk Dangerous Kills the Prime Minister’ at the Butterfly Club.

He says: “It’s an honour – and more than a little daunting – to be asked by MU Modern to adapt such a celebrated text. I’m all a-tingle at the prospect of finding a new and unexpected way of transmitting The Metamorphosis, while still preserving that strange, mordant energy that keeps us coming back to Kafka. We are, I think, each of us, on the brink of awakening from anxious dreams to find ourselves transformed into … well, why not join us this September and find out?”

MU Modern is calling out for Production Roles now! Find more here: https://www.facebook.com/events/615152742226165/

"In a run-down cinema in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35-millimetre film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and no-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lacklustre second-run movies on screen."
