I’ve lost control of my manners and my behaviour umpteen times. Been hedonistic, an addict, an abuser, a heathen. But I’ve also been good. I’ve come to realise that I’m a good person. The whip and quiver is now in some dusty cupboard at the base of some staircase in some house I’ve never been to.

Today I find myself being awarded an OAM in the Australia Day Honours. I feel lucky to have found a way to turn my miscreant into something worthy of recognition from on-high, despite feeling my sister is the true recipient. My sister is a mum who will be unable to see her kids through, courtesy of an entirely solvable problem. 3000 other mums a year are leaving kids with questions they shouldn’t have to even try to answer. And it’s happening right in front of us.

This country needs to be as aggressive towards the su***de bomber that is breast cancer as it is towards ISIS or whichever other regime is tasty at the time. Cancer is the last true riddle - the only thing left (apart from ourselves) that is wiping us out on a massive scale. With this new honour I pledge to try to collectivise you, our 300,000 strong village, into a coalition of active warriors that will not rest until the issue of medical research is treated with the seriousness it deserves. Why? Because I love my sister. I love my family. I love our village and I love my country.
