The bookbinding competition at the Royal has been judged, I am looking forward to seeing the entries and the results. I will be at the Show 22nd and 28th, doing an Inspirational presentation ( least I hope it will be). I will be presenting 4 sessions each of those days, talking about books and bookbinding, promoting the Guild and our new home. The main topic will be "Upcycling the wonderful materials of Encyclopaedia along with an introduction to different binding styles. Hopefully I will be able to interest a few more people to come and try their hand at making and repairing books. Don't hesitate to come over and see me there and say hello. These pics is of a smashed catalogue on chooks, rebound into a hardback full leather, that I just finished. Jim Finger President.

Greetings all.

The open day was a good time as we got to do the setup and layout trials, though the attendance was not what we hoped. Still, the library got some extra sorting, more equipment was assembled, and we proved it all fits in the storeroom. We unwrapped the Dobbins collection which we purchased some time ago, in anticipation for the time we would have this onsite storage and be able to actually use it.

The overcast day still had light steaming in over the workbenches. We were privileged to have a number of the life members, and representatives of some who had been promoted to better things visit.

We look forward now having our meetings in the new location and also to the establishment of classes and training systems in the next few months. Here is a few pics of one type of teaching setup. All you see is able to be moved with a small jack trolley back into storage at the end of the day, very short order.

I hope you all get to participate in its use, classes, open bindery, guest speakers, and regular members meetings. We hope to publish the schedule very soon.

Jim Finger President.

Many thanks to the messengers who have encouraged us. Our open day is still on track for 20 August and we hope to have a nice display of the bindery. This location allows us to have a moveable bindery, which can be set up in a few minutes. It means we can run a workshop with almost all the facilities of a good bindery, and then telescope it back into the storage at then. Lots of good natural light in the shared space. We are really looking forward to showing it to any interested on the open day . Encourage us more by pm or post "We will be there"

Join our Cloud HD Video Meeting

Hello Bookbinders, and my apologies this missed being on FB. Just turn up if you wish.

A reminder for our AGM on Tuesday night, 7PM at Hawthorn, our last meeting at this venue. The AGM documents were previously emailed to you.

West Uniting Church Hall, 10 Power St Hawthorn (near cnr Barkers Rd)
Parking via Grove Rd.
Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89683744705?pwd=NmU2Ym5OendJZWIxcDlIK2NqTlJrUT09

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE BECAUSE....
We have lots of things to discuss, including our new venue, plans for the rest of the year, and of course nominations for the committee which has several vacancies (secretary, editor, treasurer, social media manager).
Every organisation needs to periodically reinvent itself to stay relevant, and this is a good time for the guild as it starts afresh in new premises with new plans. So bring along your energy and ideas and get involved.

There will be a buy/swap/sell where you are welcome to sell as well as buy bookbinding equipment and supplies. Let me know if you need a table, or if you want Jim to bring any heavy item you've seen on our website.

COVID
In view of the current rapid spread of Covid, masks are required. If you would rather not gather in person you can also join by zoom. But please can you let me know by Sunday if you are coming, and if so, whether in person or by zoom. It's quite a bit of work to set up the buy/sell so we need to know how many people will be coming to Hawthorn.

MELBOURNE ROYAL SHOW
Entries close on 17 August - 3 weeks to go!

cheers

Dear Members and Friends,

I'm happy to invite you to our first in-person meeting for this year, where we can at last meet without a computer! 7pm on Tuesday 27th, at our usual venue in Hawthorn. Among other things, we will be looking for suggestions for the planned display of work for our 40th anniversary year.

Even though evenings are getting dark, damp and cool, we would love to see you in Hawthorn if you can make it. (note that due to Covid we are unable to provide supper, but you are welcome to BYO). But if you can't make it, you can join by Zoom, register by email to [email protected] or [email protected].

We will have some viewing of our projects accomplished ( or started) during the last year of non face to face meetings, along with some materials from the Guild Materials scheme, if you are looking for materials, send a note to [email protected] and we will see if we can bring it along. We will have available a range of books from the Maurice Betterridge Collection, all sales assist the Guild finances. There will also be a few pieces of equipment, and some instruction stands. If you have an unresolved challenge in binding, bring it along as well, you never know someone else may have resolved just such a challenge.

Most of all we can freely meet and talk, and enjoy the fraternal atmosphere of a shared interest in books and bookbinding.

Regards Jim Finger President

Siegel Effect- Test for Vegetable Tanned Leather

From Stephen Siegel (www.Siegel leather.com)

Bangladesh is one of the largest sources of goat leather worldwide and is often pretanned with chrome to help sort leather and ease handling. This is then sold as vegetable crust and further processed in the West where the chrome cannot be removed and is often sold as 100% vegetable
There is no real detriment to using 1% chrome tanned leather for bookbinding
as it minimally changes the organoleptic properties. However, there is a substantial cost advantage.

As the shrinkage temperature of this leather would be higher than for pure
vegetable tanned leather (>100 C vs approx. 75 C) one could easily test
with boiling water over a stove as shown in an old You Tube video which I made.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMfbTnfotkg

Similarly, alum tanned leather has a boiling point >100 C

There is a test for chrome leather which I was shown over 50 years ago. One burns a piece of leather and looks for a blue streak, from chrome ash.
Personally, I have never been able to reliably use this test.

Hello, trying to contact you because I tried to subscribe/join the VBG (I was a member until 1998). I followed the links to pay for subscription online using PayPal offered as an option but no link on the subscription page! Can't complete the subscription process [tried 3 times on pc & laptop]. Filled out the form; then when I tried the 2nd time I got the response that my name, password etc were received & registered, but still couldn't find a Paypal link to pay online. So I've sent an EFT but set the date of payment for March 2nd. I hope that works. cheers, Cher McGrath
