International Day of People with Disability is a United Nations observed day aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.
Today we recognise the many hardworking professionals - including more than 65,000 of our members - who work in disability services and go above and beyond each day to make a real difference to the lives of so many.
This year, our community is encouraged to to celebrate people with disability and their stories. By listening to the experiences of people with disability, and recognising their unique talents, skills and interests, we can challenge our own perceptions about disability and make positive changes in the community.
Our recent HESTA Excellence Awards highlighted the work of many inspiring organisations and individuals working in the disability sector, including the team from Loom Arts and Management. Loom won the Outstanding Organisation in Disability Services Award for their work furthering equality and respect for people with disability.
On International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) we recognise the incredible contributions of disability workers, including our recent HESTA Excellence Awards finalists.
The awards highlighted many inspiring organisations and individuals working in the disability sector including
Down Syndrome Australia, Aboriginal Family Support Services, Communication Extra , Jigsaw, Loom Arts and Management and Jumbunna Community Preschool and Early Intervention Centre Inc.
HESTA is proud to shine a light on these organisations and individuals working to make a real difference each day for the lives of so many.
Congratulations to our 2022 HESTA Excellence Award winners! A big thank you as well to all our incredible finalists, and to ME for providing the prize money.

Interesting read on disability and the arts sector. It was great to find out about Loom Arts and Management, a not for profit and social enterprise started in 2017 to increase representation, respect and access for disabled artists within the broader arts sector.
Such a fabulous initiative! Loom Arts and Management is helping bridge the gap between the mainstream arts industry and disability, to create a more inclusive experience.
