I used to think that if I’d painted one really lovely bit, I had to protect it at all costs.
Even when the rest of the painting wasn’t working. 😆
These days I’m much less precious.
I paint over things. A lot.
In fact, if you bought one of my paintings and somehow scraped your way through the layers, there’s a very good chance you’d find two or three completely different paintings underneath.
It took me a while to learn that one lovely little section isn’t always worth saving if it’s stopping the whole painting from becoming something better.
And I think that’s one of the things creating has taught me — not every good idea has to stay.
Sometimes you have to cover it up, change direction and trust that something else will appear.
There’s usually another possibility sitting underneath the next layer. 🌸
