I used to think that if I’d painted one really lovely bit, I had to protect it at all costs.

Even when the rest of the painting wasn’t working. 😆

These days I’m much less precious.

I paint over things. A lot.

In fact, if you bought one of my paintings and somehow scraped your way through the layers, there’s a very good chance you’d find two or three completely different paintings underneath.

It took me a while to learn that one lovely little section isn’t always worth saving if it’s stopping the whole painting from becoming something better.

And I think that’s one of the things creating has taught me — not every good idea has to stay.

Sometimes you have to cover it up, change direction and trust that something else will appear.

There’s usually another possibility sitting underneath the next layer. 🌸

One of the hardest parts of being an artist isn’t making the art… it’s remembering where on earth you put everything. 😜

Fabric is one of those materials I’m always collecting because you never know what interesting texture might work beautifully on the Gelli plate. But if it’s folded away in a box or drawer, chances are I’ll forget I even have it.

So this is my very simple studio solution — fabric samples hung on coat hangers where I can actually see them.

Nothing fancy. But it means I can flick through them quickly, find what I’m looking for and, just as importantly, rediscover something I’d completely forgotten about.

Because sometimes being organised in the studio is really just about making sure your materials stay visible enough to inspire you.

6 different mediums… one Gelli plate.

In this reel I’m experimenting with paint, ink, acrylic pen, tempera paint stick and water-soluble pastel crayon — and each one gives such a different mark, texture and effect.

That’s one of the things I love most about the Gelli plate. There isn’t just one way to use it.

Change the medium, change the tool, layer something unexpected… and suddenly you’ve got a completely different print.

Some work beautifully. Some need a bit more experimenting. But that’s half the fun.
