This waiata covers it all — colours, weather, and numbers — using a familiar tune that makes learning fun and engaging for our pēpi and tamariki.

Our tamariki thrive through repetition, encouragement, and praise. Every waiata, every kupu, and every practice helps build their confidence and strengthens their connection to te reo Māori.

Learning doesn't stop at kapa haka. The environments we create at home in our whare and in our communities play a huge role too. Whether it's Māma playing Māori music in the background, using simple te reo throughout the day, or celebrating every new word learnt, these small moments make a big difference.

Most importantly, we're teaching our babies to stand proud in who they are and to know that being Māori is their superpower ⚡️🦸🏽‍♀️🦸‍♂️

"Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori"

☁️ KUPU KAPUA ☁️

If you attended our last pratice, Matua Matt spoke about "Kupu Kapua", "Word Clouds"

As a resource to help us on our Te Reo Māori journey, the Kupu Kapua allow us to learn and build up our māori vocabulary kete 😏

By choosing 3 new māori kupu (words) that you want to learn and place them in the cloud. Over the fortnight repeat and try to use it everyday.

Example:
1. Hari (Happy) 2. Pukuriri (Angry) 3. Pouri (Sad)

Then you could extend for the following fortnight:

1. Mauiui (Sick) 2. Ngenge (Tired) 3. Hoha (Annoyed)

With continuous use, you've added 6 new words to you Vocab kete 🤩

Feel free to print out the Kupu Kapua resource at home and share with your whānau 🫶🏽🩵

External Resources:

📒 Te Aka is an online Māori dictionary. You can use this to help you find the translation of your chosen word.

📗 Te Wiremu - Williams Dictionary. This will also help you to translate your kupu.
