A few moments from the opening night of The Percival’s 2026 at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville.

It was incredibly special to see my work exhibited alongside so many thoughtful and accomplished portrait artists from across Australia, and to finally experience the exhibition in person after seeing it only online and in catalogue form.

One of my favourite moments from the evening was opening the catalogue and seeing my painting included amongst the finalists. It still feels a little surreal.

It was also wonderful to celebrate fellow UTAS student , winner of the Photographic Portrait Prize. Having multiple students represented I. The exhibition felt pretty remarkable.

Very grateful to be a part of this year’s exhibition.

I’m still taking it all in. Last night I attended the launch of The Percivals 2026 at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville as a finalist in this year’s exhibition. It was incredibly special to see the works together in person and to be surrounded by so many outstanding portrait artists from across Australia.

Travelling down from Cairns through the sugarcane fields and coastline yesterday, it all felt a little surreal seeing my painting finally on the gallery wall.

It was also wonderful to celebrate fellow UTAS student , who won the Photographic Portrait Prize. Having two UTAS students represented in the exhibition felt pretty remarkable.

I’m very grateful to be included.

Tomorrow night I’ll be attending the opening of The Percivals 2026 at the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, Townsville .

I still can’t quite believe I have work selected as a finalist in this year’s exhibition alongside so many respected artists from across Australia. It’s also really special to be sharing this moment with fellow UTAS student , who is also a finalist this year.

It feels especially meaningful to attend in person and to see the works together, hear the conversations around them, and be part of such an important portrait and art prize exhibition.

I’m very grateful and excited to be included.

Back in 2018, while living in Cairns, a friend challenged me to paint an egg because he said it was one of the hardest things to paint well. I immediately accepted the challenge and handed him this piece the same afternoon.

At the time, I had only recently returned to art after more than 25 years away from it.

This week I’m staying at his house again and noticed he still has it framed on the shelf all these years later.

Looking back now, I think this little painting quietly marked a new beginning for me.

Revisiting an earlier work.

I’ve always been drawn to David Keeling’s atmospheric painting, and I made this work as a way of learning through looking, painting and investigating his process. It was less about copying and more about trying to understand how atmosphere, movement and light can be built through paint.

Many would be surprised to know that most of my time studying fine arts is spent away from the easel. Lectures, reading, research, writing, critiques, reflections, conversations, meetings, zooms, journals, assessments …

Overtime I’ve realised that building an arts practice involves much much more than learning how to paint. It’s also about learning how to think critically, communicate ideas and understand where your work sits within a broader conversation.

I’ve been wondering whether to share more of this quieter side of the process here alongside finished works.

Would you be interested in seeing more behind-the-scenes parts of studying and building a fine arts practice?

A selection of recent portrait works.

Alongside my fine arts practice, I continue to make commissioned portraits through . These works come from my same interest in themes of memory, connection and emotional experience.

Each portrait begins with a story, an animal loved, remembered, missed or celebrated. When painting, I am interested in more than likeness. It’s the expression, the wonderful small details and the feeling of presence that matters most to me.

I was commissioned to paint ‘A Quiet Moment’ as a gift from a beautiful group of friends who wanted to preserve something deeply meaningful for someone very close to them.

The image came from a mother and daughter sharing a beautiful happy moment, one which she truly treasured.

The friends told me the family’s favourite artist is Nick Olsen. So I spent time with his work, researched his process and style and composed a background inspired by his work.

I felt such emotion while painting this work and it was important that I express their closeness without overworking it.

Overtime, this work has come to carry more than I first understood.

The client later wrote that there were “many tears when it was unveiled - in the most beautiful way.”

I cannot express how much these words mean to me.

This work was a privilege to create.

I found out today that I’ve been awarded The 2026 Jon Lajos Prize in Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania.

It means a lot to have my work recognised at this stage, while my work continues to evolve through my fine arts degree.

I’m really grateful to the teachers who have supported and challenged me along the way.

A closer look at ‘Linger and Dwell (Gale Suspended)’ together.

I’ve been exploring what happens when pictorial space starts to shift…
when it stops behaving like a landscape and begins to feel more psychological.

Dorothy sits within that ambiguity,
not quite part of the world, not quite separate from it.

The mirrored forms and repetition destabilise what feels familiar,
leaving space for projection.

There’s a sense of weight and of something unresolved.

These works sit in that in-between space, of trying to understand where you are, before anything fully settles.

Some early thinking and development is included here as well.
