Today, we bow with gratitude to the Gurus who illuminate our path with knowledge, discipline, and wisdom, throughout generations.

In Bharatanatyam, a Guru teaches far more than dance. They nurture patience, humility, devotion, and the pursuit of excellence. Every adavu, every mudra, every expression carries the blessings of the Guru–Shishya tradition that has been lovingly passed down through generations.

On this auspicious day, let us express our deepest respect to all our teachers who continue to shape our lives through the gift of learning.

From my directorial perspective, the play speaks about how time and external forces reshape societies. These forces slowly transform identity, lifestyle, and belief, often to the point where people forget who they really are. Within this, we struggle to accept our actual ancestors, rather aligning ourselves with a stronger influence that arrived later. This conflict reflects a deeper search for belonging—between inherited roots and imposed histories.

This struggle is not limited to one character or just this play. It connects to a larger South Asian identity crisis shaped by colonisation, where many of us are still negotiating who we are beneath those lasting influences. Rather than offering clear answers, the play invites reflection on how belief, when combined with authority, continues to shape individuals and communities.

This play looks at the journey of a missionary who travels to Sri Lanka with a strong sense of purpose and belief. On the surface, it is about faith and duty, but at its core, it examines what happens when one belief system enters another culture with the intention to change it. It explores themes of power, religion, morality, and identity, and questions the idea of “saving” others—asking whether such actions come from compassion, conviction, or a need for control.
