Chairs of Woden
Gouache and chalk pastel. A special piece created by
for the upcoming arts market at the 60th Birthday celebrations of Woden Valley. Find me and other Southies at Eddiston Park this Sunday. ☀️☀️☀️☀️🤞This artwork features 12 chairs of different cafes and restaurants in the area. I have been painting 'Chairguides' for over 25 years. I still love creating them, even though I only do a few a year now, I number them now (little pencil number in the corner) This is number 1 of the Woden chairs. I can also take commissions, just need 12 places and 6 colours.

Woden’s 60th is soon to come! While you wait, here’s a snapshot of Woden 60 years ago!

In 1960 the Canberra Times reported plans for the Woden District to be home to 60,000 people.

▪️ May 1962: the contract was awarded for engineering works in Canberra's new satellite city. It included roadworks, curbs, gutters, sewerage, drainage and water supply for 447 residential blocks, a school and a shopping centre in Hughes.

▪️ September 1962: Gordon Freeth, Minister of State for the Interior, named the suburbs Hughes and Curtin after Prime Ministers William Morris Hughes and John Joseph Curtin.

▪️ December 1962: the first contract for building houses in Hughes was awarded.

Over the following years, Woden’s suburbs were released and many of our parents bought land in the restricted auctions which provided a single block to people who had not held a residential lease in the ACT in the previous two years. By the early 1970s, the Woden Town Centre was underway and public service offices and community facilities such as Phillip Oval and the Phillip Pool continued to be built.

Action Moments Workshop shots from last weekend’s & photography event, hosted by local award winning photographer Graham Gall ( )

We learnt tips on shutter speeds to both freeze the action, and to show motion, plus lighting, panning, a bit of portraiture, colour composition and much more.

Thank you everyone, and .lallemand our willing model, for a fab event in and around streets in Farrer.

Dip your toes into the wonderful world of lino printing with local artist John Hart in our next No Place Like 🏡 Home Workshop.

You'll learn the basics of cutting and printing a lino print - a fantastic printmaking technique that needs only minimal equipment, so you'll be able to take your newfound skills home with you and use them any time!

Workshops are only $20 which includes everything you need on the day, as well as access to John's incredible skills to help you along.

John is a Gungahlin local with years of experience as a printmaker and teacher, and we're so excited to offer this opportunity for him to share his skills with a local audience!

This workshop will run in Woden on Saturday 4 June, and in Gungahlin on Saturday 11 June, and there are limited places left. Book your spot through our website now to avoid disappointment: link in bio 🔗
