MEET THE ARTIST - DANICA WICHTERMANN

Where Feathers Gather is a site-responsive ceramic installation by Perth Hills artist Danica Wichtermann exploring habitat, species diversity and our shared responsibility to care for the landscapes we inhabit.

Created for Arcadia Crop Circles, the work combines hand-built ceramic feathers and reclaimed timber, inspired by Western Australia’s Forest Red-tailed, Carnaby’s and Baudin’s Black Cockatoos. Individually carved and textured with native botanical impressions, each feather reflects the food sources and habitats these iconic birds depend on.

Community-made ceramic feathers, created through public workshops, form part of the installation, highlighting the power of collective action in caring for our environment. Where Feathers Gather offers a quiet reflection on renewal, connection and hope for future generations.

MEET THE ARTIST - SUESANNE SAWYER

My art practice has evolved through exploring different mediums including clay, cloth, eco during techniques and stitching, to reveal the stories held within natural and reclaimed materials.

Moving slowly through the landscape, gathering only what nature quietly offers, allowing time, weather and natural processes to leave their own marks, inspires my ceramic work. This process is quite fluid as each piece takes shape, with an emphasis on form and functionality, using hand building, wheel thrown and slip casting methods.

My creative process explores the ideas of attentiveness, memory, and transformation. It reflects a personal response to place and invites others to slow down, reconnect with the natural world, and appreciate the quiet stories held within ordinary things.

MEET THE ARTIST 🌾

I am a ceramic artist interested in all types of form and mark-making, creating work through hand-building, wheel throwing, and slip casting in porcelain and stoneware. Working with clay is deeply meditative and fulfils my endless curiosity.

While artists are encouraged to develop their own visual language, as a multilingual artist who has lived on five continents, I find myself drawn between my Japanese Zen-like aesthetic, the passion of my Spanish heritage, and the remarkable beauty of Australian flora. Daily walks with my dog provide a constant source of inspiration and a sense of wonder at the diversity of the local environment. Distinctive flowers and leaves decorate my functional pieces, while the landscape and rock formations inform my monochromatic works.

Through my work, I explore these influences and create unique connections between them. I take time to observe relationships, from microscopic details to the broader picture of caring for our environment. I hope that the wonder, joy, and serenity I experience while making art are reflected in my work and felt by those who encounter it.

MEET THE ARTIST - DENISE BENDING

I live in Mundaring in the Perth Hills and I am always so inspired by the natural beauty of the bushland that surrounds me.

I love working with clay and wire making a range of sculptures, small and large, trying different types of clay and glazes is always fun to see what comes out of the kiln.

I am still fairly new to exhibiting my pieces and I am always experimenting with different ideas. I really enjoy making one off pieces to challenge myself and work out how I can bring it all together. I have always been a creative person, but it has only been in recent years that I have made the time to take my love for all things clay to the next level.
