Ia ora na! Hello! This is me, Becca, teacher and owner of Atanua Tahitian Dance...(and amateur videographer/creator/editor of all the reels and posts that you all liked and shared 🙏🏽)

I was born and raised in Tahiti and grew up in a family where culture was deeply ingrained in our everyday lives. In fact, dancing in my family was inevitable. From dancing at family/friends gatherings, or for my community or local church, to eventually becoming a professional dancer, Ori Tahiti (Tahitian Dance) became my passion.

My first dance teacher was my mother Joanita. At the age of 3, mum said I showed love and passion for dancing and confidence on stage. At 8 years old, I joined the Conservatoire Artistique de la Polynesie Francaise where I learned the authentic steps of 'Ori Tahiti and Himene (singing) for 4 years amongst respected teachers such as Vanina, Mamie Louise and Pauline. To enhance my skills and wanting to evolve, I also joined Moeata Laughlin (3 years) and Tumata Robinson (2 years) dance schools. I am so grateful for what they taught me. I performed at the Heiva i Toata as a dance school student and as a competing dancer. I won 2nd place at the first ever Juniors' Ori Tahiti Competition organised by LGBT. It was then that I fell in love with LGBT and their unique style. I would tag along with my first cousin Pamela Ah-Min, and watch her perform with LGBT with admiration. At 16 years old, I started training with LGBT. It was a dream come true.

Want to learn about a new culture? Come and join Atanua and you'll discover the Tahitian Culture.

"Tahitians today have inherited a rich, expressive culture from their ma’ohi ancestors. From the ma’ohi, came the pulse of Tahitian life, a world where the lives of gods, warriors and men crossed in colorful legends. It’s a place where the music and dance and art rose from the wonder of everyday island life. It’s also where javelin throwing began as the sport of the gods, kings favored surf riding and men competed in canoe races and stone lifting as a show of pure strength."

Flower = Tiare🌺

"Tropical flowers seem to be everywhere on the islands, particularly in the hair of Tahitians. The famous tiare Tahiti flower is used in leis to welcome travelers and returning family. Tradition holds that if they are taken, women and men should wear a flower behind the left ear."

My first Tahitian Dance teacher. Mum 👑 She travelled from Tahiti last week and is now here in Australia after 2 1/2 years (covid restrictions)
•I was only 3 when she first started teaching me. I remember loving every bit of it.
•Mum used to dance with the greatest names in Tahiti. If you know Coco Hotahota, then you can now imagine how amazing she was. •Her beautiful figure, hair, smile and dancing led her to dance with the greatest dance groups, to perform all around the Polynesian islands and to be on stage at the most popular hotels (Hôtel Taharaa), doing solos, which at the time was the absolute goal for a dancer.
•Mum is our biggest supporter and fan. Whether big or small, she always believes in our dreams. Sometimes more than we do ourselves. She’s the one behind the scenes. Truly. She deserves the biggest recognition. She makes everything happen for us. And if there’s something that could stop her, be certain she’ll find another way. She rejoices in every success that we have and never asks anything in return🌺
If you'd like to learn from mum, join us in class while she's here.
