From paper to skin, 133 years later. 🤍

My aunty’s Great Great Grandfather, Giacomo (James) Bombardieri’s signature, taken from original paperwork dated 1893 and recreated for her as a little piece of family history she can carry with her.

There’s something incredibly special about preserving the handwriting of someone who came so many generations before us.
A name, a signature, a story — still being carried forward. 🤍

And even more special when I get to tattoo a piece of our own family history. 🥹

I grew up knowing her simply as Granny Rae.

But long before I understood the significance of her story, Raelene Robinson was making Australian tattoo history.

In the early 1960s, Raelene became Australia’s first female tattoo artist — entering a world that, at the time, belonged almost entirely to men.

The photograph of Raelene tattooing Bev Nicholas — also known as Bev Robinson or Cindy Ray — is one of my favourites. Bev would later marry my grandfather, Danny Robinson, becoming my step-grandmother. Two heavily tattooed women, captured together in an era when seeing either was extraordinary.

But tattooing was only one expression of Raelene’s creativity.

She was an artist through and through. If something could become a canvas, chances are she would make art on it — kangaroo skins, carpets, walls and even her car.

I think one of the strangest and most beautiful parts of getting older has been realising the significance of the history I simply grew up around.

To me, she was Granny Rae.

Today, as a third-generation female tattoo artist myself, I see her differently.

I see the trail she helped create.

And I’m incredibly proud to be part of the story that came after her. 🖤
