SOUL SEARCHIN'
at Golden Age Cinema
presented by Groovescooter
reviewed by me

Soul Searchin' is a highly relatable collection of stories surrounding the three main characters of Los Angeles' own Southern Soul Spinners crew, their individual histories and travels, all fuelled by the obsessive never ending search to uncover every soul recording known to exist and further, those lost to the dust of ages. Each perspective offers a unique personal insight into this world of cultural preservation but for me none more poignant than that of elder statesman Ruben Molina aka Flaco's accounts of survival from the turbulent street life of 60's Los Angeles and how Soul music would eventually offer a chance for communal healing and unity through the sentimental message contained within these very earnest songs of love. Each member's energy balances the other, which collectively add the perfect weight to a heart warming documentation; just one pocket of an insanely passionate and decades-deep scene, which stretches across continents. And with new blood on the rise, one which shows no signs of slowing. Shoutout to filmmakers Jesus Cruz & Alex Vigano, along with key subjects, Arlene Sepulveda aka Soulera 5150, Josh Whittlemore and the aforementioned OG, Ruben Molina. Our very own Queen of Sweet Soul, Miss Goldie gets a mention too, big up Samantha. Of course a super special shout to Georgie Zuzak from Groovescooter here in Sydney, who made the screening possible. Paris would be proud. Can't wait to see this film again, here's hoping it gets enough attention to warrant further licencing so our friends in other cities can check it out too. Oh and before i forget, below is the tracklisting for my set after the show.

DISCO DROP!! Straight from last weekend's playbox and a firm regular spin of recent times, once again. Slight anomaly one could say, but fantastic and unique example of a rare US Boogie record from the early 80's, one which works an absolute charm on the floor. Many elements of the tune appealed to me when first introduced several years back by the enigmatic Estonian (IYKYK) so the opportunity of a sale was seized and the disc copped before being quickly filed away, never really giving it a chance as i wasn't able to get passed the electric guitar bits. However as time has moved on and with a few spins can confirm they do in fact work and this tune is an absolute winner. Instincts were correct! Looking forward to next Friday 24th when it will most likely feature in my final hour at Caterpillar Club (8pm-midnight) I know most are completely oblivious to certain facts but i must add it's literally the only known copy of the record in this city and dare i say country. Bottom line, if you're like me these things do matter. We are going deep! Hear the full track here and hopefully see you on the floor for the real thing at peak level on the night >>> https://youtu.be/sNNJWDRXaYQ?si=Dl8QNPiL9TtRbecY

Well, after a phenomenal night dancing to 4hrs of François K in the mix down inside the amazing bunker room of the Imperial Hotel Erskineville for the WiP party on Saturday, we were treated to a very special "in conversation with" the very generous Mr. Kevorkian himself the following evening at Club 77, an intimate gathering for which i had the privilege of playing the opening set. Venturing out into some different sonic territory for this one, hoping to channel vibes most of those present weren't accustomed to hearing from me. Thanks to Mike, Pip, Jane and Lorna. Here's the set list.

First post back for the new year! Spiritually conscious midtempo Modern Soul Boogie from this St. Louis group and their own label debut from 1984. Total Involvement Records only saw this one release before the group rebranded themselves as a Roots Reggae outfit the following year, before once again disappearing into obscurity. Tough one here which first came to my attention several years back by the dealer homie in Miami whose name escapes me right now. But i never dared forget that label design and would not rest til this stunning rarity was gripped. Gorgeous clean copy it is too. BANGIN' THE BOX ON SYDNEY'S
TOUGHEST SOUND SYSTEM TONIGHT!!
Something I've been looking forward to quite some time. Joining: local legend Mike Who and special guest from France Matthieu Biron, partner of Fréquence bar in Paris.

In anticipation of the set our friends at 77 asked me to compile a list of 5 records from my extensive Detroit Techno vinyl catalog. Virtuous productions which imo are totally underplayed but have an enduring quality which after decades has kept them still sounding fresh. You may or may not be hearing some of these in the late set mix. Come hold space with us and farewell our friend on the last stop of his JPN/BALI/AUS tour before heading back to EU. Vibes will be high on this final Saturday before Christmas. Doors open 10pm, guest list looking healthy so please arrive early! 👊🏽

Saturday 20th December: Club 77:
Boogie Monster flipping back into default 90's Detroit Techno mode. Been stacking plates all week, very much looking forward to this one. Late set will go hard, can't wait to unleash these analog beasts on Sydney's toughest sound system.

Sweet & Innocent were high school friends from around the way of local label Act IV Productions, a short lived Tennessee recording studio of the early 70's era, for whom the pair released two singles, utilising in-house players The Memphis Mustangs as their backing band. It came as quite a shock when first learning that producer Ron Bledsoe was actually a major label executive for some of the most prominent media companies in all of North America (and the world) What exactly lead him to head up a project such as this obscure boutique concern is really quite beyond me. But the results are nothing short of raw soul perfection to these ears and with no distribution to speak of the entire label run of just four releases also happen to remain mostly fairly scarce in the field, with not a whole lot of copies known to exist. This is the group's (and label) debut release from 1972, now a firm classic in the Low Rider Sweet Soul Harmony realm.
