For the latest issue of their wonderful Conversations series, our friends at Runway Journal have published an interview conducted as a part of last years disorganising project with West Space and Liquid Architecture. For this interview disorganising member Joel Stern spoke with members of Arika, a political arts organisation concerned with supporting connections between artistic production and social change.

From Runway Journal:

The twelfth Runway Journal x All Conference Conversation comes from the disorganising project, a joint program initiated by current All Conference members Liquid Architecture, West Space and Bus Projects. disorganising was an expansive, collaborative project conducted over the
course of 2021, in which the three organisations looked
to experiment with divergent ways of organising and creating. Throughout the project, members from each
organisation undertook a series of conversations with self-organised initiatives and individuals based in Australia and overseas. Interviewed by Joel Stern, the first conversation from this series is with Barry Esson and Bryony Mclntyre from Arika.

"Presented as part of GSPF 2022, 'Wild City' is a child-focused play-based workshop led by visual artist Kathy Holowko. The workshop facilitates a collaborative sculpture made with and by children that considers wild animals as citizens in urban spaces. Families can explore this alternative future city, where wild animals and humans co-exist and share the landscape.

The workshop will be accompanied by Sacred Heart student Orchestra led by Zoe Barry.

Kathy Holowko is torn between utopia and dystopia, marvelling and questioning, nature and humanity. Holowko's practice explores urban life's effects on our understanding of ecology. In busy, human-centric environments, Holowko searches for narratives and connections that can help reconsider our world as a cyclical, and shared habitat.
Holowko’s work has appeared at Federation Square, NGV, White Night, National Wool Museum, Sculpture by The Sea, ArtPlay, Bendigo Conservatory, Montalto, Albury Library Museum, Utrecht University Museum, and BAK Gallery amongst others."

Ahead of tomorrow evenings openings, we’re starting the day with a conversation between Ebony Hickey and Lisa Waup. Speaking to personal narratives of Blackness, adoption and transport in Ebony’s current exhibition ‘Strong I Am’, you can listen to Ebony and Lisa live on @crawlradio__ from 11am!

--

Ebony Hickey has become known for her diaristic drawings, sculptures and video works that translate deeply personal narratives of Blackness, adoption, sexuality, and queerness. Strong I Am is a significant solo project that continues these themes while also exploring the artists ancestral connections to Haiti, the sea and the Transatlantic Slave trade.

Lisa Waup is an award winning multi-disciplinary artist and curator. She lives and works in Naarm (Melbourne) and is of Italian, Gunditjmara and Torres Strait Islander descent. Over her career, Lisa has developed an artistic practice which spans weaving, printmaking and sculpture, working across media to create forms imbued with layers of history and story.

--

We invite you join us this Wednesday 4 May from 6-8pm for the opening celebration of Ebony's current exhibition 'Strong I Am', as well as 'Ruminations on the body (Bussy) of Christ' by Anselma Forlano, and 'AT ARM’S LENGTH' by Lacey - Law - Lobwein co-presented with Composite.

FROM THE READING ROOM
—————————
‘Artist-Run Europe: Practice / Projects / Spaces’ edited by Gavin Murphy & Mark Cullen

Part how-to manual, part history, and part socio-political critique, Artist-Run Europe looks at the conditions, organisational models, and role of artist-led practice within contemporary art and society. The aim is to show how artist-run practice manifests itself, how artist-run spaces are a distinctive and central part of visual art culture, and how they present a complex, heterogeneous, and necessary set of alternatives to the art institution, museum and commercial gallery.

Contributors: Jason E. Bowman, AA Bronson, Noelle Collins, Valerie Connor, Mark Cullen, Céline Kopp & Alun Williams, Joanna Laws, Freek Lomme, Megs Morley, Gavin Murphy, Gavin Wade and Katherine Waugh.

Takeover at Parliament Steps

For ACCA’s Who’s Afraid of Public Space? The Social Studio’s young fashion designers have teamed up with Outer Urban Projects’ ensemble of talented young performers from the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne to present a fashion parade celebrating modest wear on Sunday 6 March 2022, 2-3pm at Parliament of Victoria’s steps, the home for political debate and democracy in Victoria. The parade features textile and fashion works that reflect upon notions of modesty across cultures, accompanied by dancers, vocalists and a percussionist in an ecstatic, lively celebration of diverse young peoples’ return to public expression and public space.
