π§ βMy pH is wrong. How do I fix it?β
The short answer is: donβt chase the number!
Your fish need a stable, suitable pH, not necessarily the βperfectβ number you found online. That's why you'll often see a pH range, rather than a specific number.
Things like KH (carbonate hardness), GH, your tap water and your substrate/decorations can all influence where your pH naturally sits and how stable it is.
So what should you do?
1οΈβ£ Test your aquarium water AND your tap water.
The API Freshwater Master Test Kit is a great all-rounder for freshwater tanks, measuring pH, high-range pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
2οΈβ£ Work out what your fish actually need.
Is it too high, is it too low?
Driftwood in the aquarium naturally lowers pH (softer conditions), aragonite/limestone increases pH (Harder conditions), these decorations are excellent when used to buffer conditions appropriately.
3οΈβ£ If adjustment is genuinely needed, make changes SLOWLY
Large, sudden pH changes can stress fish. Small, gradual adjustments are the name of the game. Aim for adjustments over a number of days.
