STARTING THIS WEEK: A deeply moving adaptation of Helen Macdonald’s award-winning memoir of the same name, starring Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson.

When Helen’s beloved father passes away, she is overtaken by grief and loses herself in memories of their time birding and exploring the natural world together. To recapture her memories Helen retreats from the world, turning to the ancient and demanding practice of falconry in an attempt to navigate her loss. Through the process of training a fierce goshawk named Mabel, she immerses herself in the wild, drawn to the bird’s instinct, solitude, and intensity. H is For Hawk is a soaring journey of the connection between people and nature, and how it might be possible to reconcile loss through love.

A fractured fairytale of resilience and grace, Life Could Be A Dream follows Sarah, a forty-year-old woman standing at the threshold of a life she’s never lived. As she and her teenage son Otis navigate their way toward freedom, they must confront both external threats and the mythology Sarah has held about rescue and relationships. Finding temporary sanctuary in a luxurious estate she’s been tasked with selling, Sarah begins to imagine a different future one defined by choice rather than fear.

This is a story about breaking cycles: a mother trying to model strength for her son while learning, herself, what it means to let go and begin again. At its heart lies the fierce and fragile bond between Sarah and Otis as they redefine their relationship and discover what liberation can look like. Director Jasmin Tarasin brings an intimate understanding to this story of freedom and family, examining how cycles can be broken, allowing the next generation to choose differently.

Tickets available online.

STARTING THIS WEEK: When Paula Cohen-Solal is found dead, the authorities rule it a su***de. But her psychiatrist, Lilian Steiner (Jodie Foster in her first major French-language role), refuses to accept it. Convinced that Paula’s husband Simon is involved, she decides to investigate on her own – even if it means venturing far beyond her professional limits. Drawing on a breadth of Foster’s previous film roles, this is a sharp investigative neo-noir with a bold twist, blending tension and dark humour within a charged psychological setting. Accompanied by a thrilling score from composer Robin Coudert.

With the late Frederick Wiseman in a small role!

STARTING THIS WEEK: Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan dreams of being the first person to circumnavigate the globe. When his ambitions are nixed by his king, he decides to defect, taking his grand plans to the King of Spain instead. Magellan then embarks on a
journey across the high seas. Along the way, power dynamics shift and objectives change, but when Magellan arrives in the Philippine archipelago his plans truly unravel.

Gorgeous visuals, grand vistas, and a truly distinct performance from Gael García Bernal mark this new epic tale from master storyteller Lav Diaz. An intricate, emotionally inspiring cinematic experience well worth the time.

STARTING THIS WEEK: From the beloved director of Once and Sing Street comes a crowd-pleasing musical comedy-drama like no other.

After a chance meeting, washed-up wedding singer Rick (Paul Rudd) drunkenly jams with former boy-band sensation Danny (Nick Jonas). Six months later, Rick is astounded to discover their impromptu song has skyrocketed to global fame, yet Danny receives all the glory. Rick fights for artistic recognition, but in pursuit of the rockstar life he’s dreamed of having, risks losing a grip on his family, friends, and the things he really loves.

A charming, funny, and feel-good cinema experience.

STARTING THIS WEEK: A drama following three generations across seven decades, All That’s Left of You traces the tale of a Palestinian family living in the West Bank from the 1948 days of the Nakba to the 2020s under Israeli occupation. Told with an emotionally complex and layered sensitivity, along with a sharp sense of pacing and technical skill, this is an engaging epic about love, loss, and belonging.

Helmed by Palestinian-American creative Cherien Dabis, a writer/director on televisions shows like The L Word and Only Murders in the Building, this is essential tale for contemporary times. Significantly, this stars the late acting great Mohammad Bakri in his final film role, along with two of his sons, Adam and Saleh. Selected as the Jordanian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards.
