Theatrical performance number two. Shakespeare adaptation/interpretation number two.
I was floored by & Juliet, so I’m excited to see what Peter Evans from Bell Shakespeare has to say. 🤞

Rocky Horror Picture Show

The 50th Anniversary production of Rocky Horror Show only in Newcastle, Civic Theatre till Sunday 11th February. It has become the venue’s highest selling musical, beating the record set by Come From Away last year. I came with high expectations for this show and sadly I have to say it let me down. There were only a handful of people who got up to dance the Time Warp at the end! No one dressed up to see the show, however maybe the 2pm showing is a little too early for the scantly clad to venture out. I really hope the night time shows are a little livelier. The performers fed off this audience and so the whole event felt a little flat.
Despite the lackluster energy from the audience, the show had its merits. The cast fully embraced their characters, immersing themselves in the delightful absurdity of the show. Notably, Stella Perry, known from The Voice, injected a rock edge into Magenta, a departure from previous portrayals that I found refreshing. Henry Rollo, portraying Riff Raff, showcased impressive vocal skills, and was the highlight of the performance for me.
While Myf Warhurst appeared somewhat out of her comfort zone as the narrator, especially during her pantsing during the curtain call. Her banter with the audience was commendable, I hope that she may shine brighter later in the season.

Gatsby at The Green Light

I Stepped in with expectations, only to find them exceeded; GATSBY at the Greenlight offers an immersive, unexpectedly delightful evening of pure entertainment. This showcase blends old-fashioned sweat and sinew talent with contemporary theatrical flair, presenting a captivating array of dance, song, circus acts, and burlesque, all woven together by the narrative thread of an iconic American novel.
The Studio at the Sydney Opera House proves itself as one of the city's most versatile and thrilling venues, perfectly suited for this type of performance. The space is designed like a 1920s nightclub, featuring a prominent wood-panelled bar at its centre, which also doubles as a raised stage. A balcony with staircases on either side adds a second level for performances.
Seating options include a premium area with cabaret tables and chairs, and the VIP package offers a seat at a table, a complimentary cocktail, and a thoughtfully curated selection of tasty treats. The wait staff, friendly, efficient, and playfully involved in the show, enhance the overall experience. Standard seats are situated behind the tables, and on the mezzanine level, a balcony provides a vantage point for patrons to observe the action below.
The entertainment is relentless, with one bartender showcasing magnificent juggling skills and the other mesmerizing the audience with tap-dancing prowess. Aerialists flex like rubber, spin on a suspended coat rack, and dangle from a tightly-pulled ponytail while wielding fire. Gatsby and Daisy deliver a beautiful aerial ballet on rings, and Odette provides vocals that range from fierce to sultry. Bettie Bombshell, in addition to her seductive wanderings, performs a saucy st******se, adding to the non-stop excitement of the evening.
If I had to bring in down I would say that we spent some time in the dark as they transition from one performance to the next. But, now I’m just nit picking!

Faulty Towers Review

Surrounded by action on all sides, we swiftly discovered that no one was exempt from becoming part of the performance. Every joke landed with precision, and audience participation was warmly embraced. Our anticipation grew from the moment the bread graced the tables.
This experience stood out for its unparalleled uniqueness, featuring brilliant on-the-spot improv and hilarious scenes that had us in fits of laughter as the trio brought the house down. Kudos to the cast for flawlessly embodying the mannerisms, British accents, and costumes reminiscent of the beloved 1970s television series Fawlty Towers. They skillfully paid homage to the iconic moments and interactions between the characters.
Sybil contributed her gentle feminine nature, providing a calming balance to Basil's highly physical theatrics and Manuel's silliness. The cast, always in sync, delivered outstanding performances every time they graced the stage. seizing each opportune moment with unsuspecting audience members, they brought them into the spotlight with lighthearted jabs and tongue-in-cheek humor.
This show exemplifies absurdist comedy at its peak, offering laughter, tears, and suspense. Our grins stretched from ear to ear, leaving my cheeks sore throughout the entire performance. I wholeheartedly recommend this show to anyone in need of a pick-me-up. Whether with a loved one or best friend, it provides a unique dining experience that will be fondly remembered for years to come.
Due to the popularity of the show it will be coming back to Rydges in June this year. Keep an eye out.
