Coming up next Thursday, 18 August 2022, at 7pm, at The Greek Centre (Mezzanine) in Melbourne.

SEMINAR: NEGOTIATING IDENTITY: GREEK AND ARMENIAN ASPIRATIONS FOR A PONTO-ARMENIAN FEDERATION

A lecture entitled Negotiating Identity: Greek and Armenian Aspirations for a Ponto-Armenian Federation will be presented by lawyer and writer Dean Kalimniou, on Thursday, 18 August 2022, 7 pm, at the Greek Centre and online, as a part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars, offered by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

Much is made of the proposed Ponto-Armenian Federation as provided for by US President Wilson in the aftermath of the First World War. This lecture discusses how feasible this prospect could have been, given the facts on the ground, the competing interests of World Powers, and of course the attitudes of the key stakeholders themselves, the Greeks of Pontus and the Armenians.

Dean Kalimniou is a lawyer, poet, and short story writer within the Greek community. He has published seven poetry collections in Greek and translated the works of many local Greek authors into English. He has also published translations of Papadiamantis’ short stories in the critical anthology “The Boundless Garden. Selected Short Stories.” His most recent book, “Simela and the Magic Kemenche”, is also his first bilingual children’s book.

Selected Short Stories». #Greece #Scandal #Government #Democracy

"Two top Greek government officials resigned on Friday amid growing pressure on the administration of Greek Prime Minister #KyriakosMitsotakis over an espionage scandal in which an opposition leader's phone was tapped.

The government’s General Secretary Grigoris Dimitriadis, a top aide and nephew of Mitsotakis, stepped down, followed by the resignation of Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP) chief Panagiotis Kontoleon, after being accused of "incorrect actions" by the prime minister's office.

The double resignation followed revelations about the attempted hacking of MEP #NikosAndroulakis' mobile phone with spyware named Predator. Androulakis is the leader of the third-largest party in the Greek parliament, #Pasok, while Mitsotakis hails from the center-right #NewDemocracy party."

The phone of an opposition leader was bugged.

Atomic bomb explosion, Hiroshima, Japan, 8.15am, August 6, 1945... Because U.S. strategists wanted to flatten an entire city with a single atomic bomb and Hiroshima was the right size...

In the spring of 1945, the US military convened a Target Committee, a mix of officers and scientists, to decide where the bomb should fall.

The minutes of this committee, declassified years ago, show that the Target Committee considered some far less deadly targets. The initial list included a remote military installation and Tokyo Bay, where the bomb would have been detonated as a demonstration.

But at the end the committee decided that they needed to demonstrate to the world the power of the new weapon. They also needed to scare the Japanese into unconditional surrender...

The other two photos, showing the aftermath of the explosion, are from September 15th and November 17th, 1945.

Is British Museum’s stance shifting on Parthenon marbles return?

#ParthenonMarbles #BritishMuseum #Greece #Acropolis

Interesting read!

"Displayed at the London museum since 1832, their return has been demanded by Greece for much of that time, leaving the two countries stuck in a sometimes testy stalemate. It is now time “to do something qualitatively different”, Williams told the Sunday Times.

But what? Given the recent comments by the chair of trustees, George Osborne, that there was “a deal to be done” with Greece, the museum appeared to be hinting at a change of its stance on the marbles. So are we likely to see the marbles on display in Athens soon, or perhaps even given back permanently to Greece?
Not quite. Pressed on the detail of the proposed partnership, the British Museum was unequivocal: “We will loan the sculptures, as we do many other objects, to those who wish to display them … provided they will look after them and return them.”

Similarly, comments by Boris Johnson that returning the marbles was a matter for the British Museum were widely interpreted as the UK softening on repatriation. The government now insists he meant only loans – and that the museum is still legally barred from giving anything back.

" Almost 60% of Britons now think the Parthenon marbles belong in Greece, with only 18% believing they should stay in London.

There are plenty in the heritage sector who are sympathetic to the British Museum’s ambition to be “a museum of the world, for the world”. Among them is the archaeologist Mike Pitts, who says that debate about the marbles has “become more about politics and mudslinging than anything else … It’s much more helpful to think about the present and the future, rather than what happened in the past.

“That’s not to say that nothing should ever be returned. But I think we need a … wider conversation rather than a few headline, simplistic representations.”

As for one possible way forward, says Pitts, “the British Museum is saying we’re happy to loan material, and they don’t seem to be putting any kind of limits on how long that loan might be. So one can imagine that some really significant part of the Parthenon collection could end up effectively on permanent display in Athens. But as a loan.”

Changing public attitudes have made issues of repatriation and decolonisation harder to ignore

The decision of the US Supreme Court and protests around the world have brought this issue to the forefront of public debate. The issue of abortion is one of women’s equality and human rights. Women should be able to control what happens to their bodies and have the autonomy to decide whether to have a child or not. All women should have access to legal abortion so that the safety of women is the primary concern. The Archbishop’s inference that women are mere carriers of a foetus and their needs and wants are secondary to that is not in keeping with the advances in women’s human rights in contemporary society. No woman from our community should feel alone, ashamed or marginal because of her personal decision in regard to having an abortion. Women deserve support and not censure or opprobrium for making decisions that are in the best interests of their health and life circumstances. We encourage the leaders of the church to abandon attitudes to women that belong in the dark ages and have no place in the contemporary Greek-Australian community or anywhere else in the world.
