The Line of Lode is a "must do" on anyone's list of places to see in Broken Hill, check out the beautiful sunrises & sunsets. The cafe is opened each day until 3pm & an added bonus to your trip up to the hill.

The line of lode collective is a new group set up to talk all about events, mining history and stories that relate to miners memorial. We will discuss events that will be held on top of the line of lode such as local craft stalls, tours of the miners

What i think is one of the most important monuments at the line of lode and one which most people drive past is the 2 little ore carts located on the bend as you drive back down the hill and it is the memorial to the 2 miners that were never recovered and were entombed 500 feet below. Thomas Jordan aged 20 and Leopold Campbell aged 21 were buried deep under after the major creep that went from the 500 foot to the surface. Every time the rescuers tried to recover the bodies more and more rock kept falling resulting in making it impossible for the rescue team to recover them. This section of the line of lode needs a more substantial display and story boards constructed on that site so that these men are never forgotten. Leopold’s brother Albert was killed on the mines in may of 1901, his brother in law Peter Devine’s was killed on the mines in February 1902 and Leopold was entombed on 8th October 1902. The 8th of October is now used as miners Memorial Day. leopold had a twin brother called William and his mother had 13 children.

Many people have traveled to the top of the line of lode to see the miners memorial, which is wonderful however there are many stories attached to the many names that appear on the site. Next time you visit the memorial walk to 1933 and turn around and look at the amount of people lost their lives in the first 50 years of mining, 578 people died in that period however in the last 50 years we have only had 20 deaths yes that is 20 to many but it shows how changes in our work culture is making mining a far safer industry
