When asked me who inspires me, I gave what started as a joke and ended with a truth.
I used to have role models, then I discovered the internet 😂
The older I get, the more I realise the people who inspire me most aren't celebrities, influencers, or people I've never met. They're my parents.
They had a life in Zimbabwe. Familiarity, community & comfort. Yet they chose to leave it all behind & move to a country they barely knew because they believed their children could have a brighter future.
Imagine the courage that takes.
To leave everything you've built. Start over. Work jobs nobody sees. Struggle in silence. Sacrifice so your children can have opportunities you never had.
And imagine doing all of that while carrying a weight many immigrants know too well.
Being treated like an outsider. Judged by your accent, your name, or the colour of your skin. Living in a world where immigrants are often blamed for problems they didn't create, when most are simply trying to build a better life for their families.
Yet they keep going.
Growing up, we were sold the American Dream. The big house. The white picket fence.
But somewhere along the way I realised something.
I'm African.
Why am I chasing somebody else's dream when my own story is rooted in something far greater?
That's when "The African Dream" stopped being a phrase and became a mindset.
A reminder that there were people before us who fought battles we will never fully understand. People who paved roads we now walk on. People who made it possible for us to dream bigger than they ever could.
Today, there are fewer barriers than ever before. A kid with a phone, a dream, and a WiFi connection can build something that reaches the world.
So if there's one thing I hope the next generation understands, it's this:
You are not waiting for the dream.
You are the dream.
Your dreams are valid. Your voice & your story matters.
Stay the course. Work hard. Keep showing up & if you do, I truly believe your success will surpass anything I manage to achieve in my lifetime. ❤️🌍🇿🇼🇦🇺
