For five decades, Australia's Working Holiday Maker program has transformed backpacking trips into cultural exchange adventures that build lifelong global connections.
This is particularly true for those who become Au Pairs with Host Families. Working Holiday Makers in these roles become valued and cherished members of Australian households, playing vital roles in the lives of the next generation of Australian children. The Au Pair experience creates deep, meaningful bonds that extend far beyond a typical working holiday.
Established in January 1975 as the Work and Holiday scheme for young people from Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom, the program's purpose was to promote cultural exchange and international understanding, strengthening Australia's global friendships through genuine people-to-people connections.
Over five decades, this reciprocal program has expanded dramatically to include arrangements with 50 countries across two visa subclasses. Today, eligible young travelers can enjoy an extended holiday in Australia while undertaking short-term work or fully immersing themselves in family life as an Au Pair to support their stay.
Assistant Secretary Immigration Engagement, Pacific and Major Events Brett White said the anniversary highlights the program's enduring role in connecting Australia with the world.
'The Working Holiday Maker program was created to help young people from different countries learn from and about each other. Its success over 50 years shows the lasting value of cultural exchange,' he said.
'Working holiday makers bring fresh perspectives, energy and enthusiasm. They support local industries, especially in regional areas, and return home with a deeper understanding of Australia—often becoming lifelong friends of our country. Those serving as Au Pairs create especially meaningful connections with Australian families and children.'
As Australia celebrates this milestone, the WHM program continues fostering stronger links between young people worldwide. The next 50 years promises to welcome new generations of travelers, support local communities, and showcase Australia to the world.
