THIS WEEKS ARTIST SPOTLIGHT : Contessa
Contessa was introduced to the dance culture 20 years ago, experiencing the scene in many different aspects. His love for the music igniting a passion that ultimately led him to the sacred art of ‘turntabilism’. Very quickly his natural ability landed him his first gig in a club. It was these foundations that saw him become Brisbane’s most sought after new talent.
His growing popularity led him to many exciting avenues including guest spot’s on Wild FM’s mix up sessions and “Wildlife Recovery Show”. His first introduction to Broadcasting, landing him more permanent radio sets.
This led to regular spots at famous recoveries “The Next Dimension”, “The Second Dimension” and dayclub “Magic Sunday’s” gained him a following and a permanent residency with these clubs.
Contessa’s energy was now focused on a DJ competition run by Brisbane’s then leading dance club “Technomad” where he produced the winning formula and secured his first permanent residency. This saw him headline along side DJ’s Barking Boy and Justin Gold on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights at Technomad. The year 2000 saw him support main room DJ’s Robbie Nelson and John 00 Fleming at the “Gatecrasher 2000” tour, a gig that saw him play to one thousand "up for it" clubbers.
On New Years 2000, Contessa completed a whirlwind 12 day tour of New Zealand with friend and tour support DJ Golde. Starting in Dunedin, they had the pleasure of playing at “Bath St”, Dunedin’s premier nightclub, an awesome venue for their international debut. New Years Eve saw them both DJ in Christchurch’s most diverse club, “The Platinum Lounge”. As headlining DJ’s, they played to a welcoming crowd of energetic clubbers, enticing them with their Aussie flavour. Next stop was the highlight of the tour, “The Gathering”. For years, The Gathering has held its place as New Zealand's premier New Years event. G1 was the New Year’s celebration for 2001. Three nights, an amazing new location and 15,000 people. It was the fifth Gathering New Year’s party, at an amazing new site in Cobb Valley, Golden Bay. After a very successful New Zealand tour, Contessa continued to pursue his passion for music by securing a guest spot at the acclaimed Noosa club “The Rolling Rock”. His next visit, a self-promoted party with business partner DJ Golde, saw him support one of Australia’s leading DJ/ Producers, Chris Fresh. Contessa then successfully promoted their next club-night, the CD launch of “Balance 002” mixed by Kasey Taylor, who also featured as special guest DJ on the night. Since then Contessa had continued to built his reputation by way of regular guest spots at the Sunshine Coast’s 240 Volt, Jordans & the Reef Hotel, a residency at Manfred’s Music Bar, in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley and then went onto promoting joint venture club nights, "Prognosis", at The Music Kafe, Fox Hotel & Barsoma.
Over the course of his career Contessa has steadily moved from his formerly preferred genre to a much wider range of sounds from funky Tech House, Deep House to Deeper Dark Progressive. Contessa aka Tsunami, has played alongside some of the worlds finest Dj’s including:
