Everyone thinks you pick up a brush and freedom just arrives.

It didn’t work like that for me.

I didn’t paint until I was almost 50.

And when I finally started, I was at the lowest point of my life.

My son was struggling. I was homeschooling him. And when my coach asked me what I was proud of, I couldn’t think of a single thing.

I felt completely lost.

So I started doing the inner work.

I got clear on what was holding me back.

I learned to stop listening to everyone else and start listening to myself.

And THEN I picked up a paintbrush.

The first time I got into pure abstract painting, I felt a freedom I’d never felt before.

The whole world opened up.

But here’s what I know now.

The inner work and the painting feed each other.

The inner work frees you up enough to make a mark without flinching.

The painting frees you up even more.

You can’t think your way into creative freedom.

And you can’t paint your way there either.

You need both.

That’s exactly why I teach the way I do.

Free first.

Then paint. 💛

That’s exactly why I teach the way I do.

Not mindset first.

Not painting first.

Both.

Because in my experience, that’s where the real transformation happens.

And it’s the entire foundation of Unleash Your Creative Potential. 💛

Because here’s the thing. The exploration IS where you find your voice.

You get to discovet who you are as an artist and who you are as a person.

What works for me might feel completely wrong in your hands. What feels awkward to you right now might turn out to be exactly your thing.

You don’t find your expressive voice by getting the supplies right first. You find it by getting paint on a canvas and seeing what happens.

That messy, uncertain, figuring-it-out process? That’s not the obstacle. That’s the whole point.

So many people think they need to learn how to paint properly before they’re allowed to enjoy painting.

And honestly?
That belief stops more people from creating than lack of talent ever will.

That’s why I teach expressive abstract art first.

I see so many people paralysed before they even begin.
Overthinking.
Second guessing.
Trying to make the “right” move.

Meanwhile their creativity is sitting there begging for a little freedom.

And I really do believe this goes deeper than painting.

Because when you learn to trust yourself creatively, something shifts.
You stop gripping so tightly.
You stop needing every move to be perfect.
You start expressing instead of performing.

In your art.
In your voice.
In your life.

That’s the work.

Not perfection.
Expression.

This is what intuitive painting actually looks like in real time.

No overthinking. No second guessing. Just responding to what’s already on the canvas.

It feels strange at first. Then it feels like the only way you ever want to paint.

If you’d like to be guided on this journey, Unleash Your Creative Potential is my online course designed to help you find exactly this.

F**k the rules for a second.

Honestly, I’m so sick of hearing:
“Yeah but what about composition?”
“What about colour theory?”
“You need to learn the fundamentals first.”

YES. Those things matter.
Not as much as you think.
And yes, I cover them in my course.

But that is not where I start.

Because most people are already so terrified of getting things wrong that the second they touch a canvas, they freeze.

We’ve spent years in an education system that trained us to look for the right answer, avoid mistakes and judge ourselves constantly.

Then we wonder why people can’t loosen up and paint freely.

It’s not because you’re not capable.
It’s because they’re overthinking every bloody brushstroke.

Expressive painting isn’t just about learning technique.

It’s about undoing some of that conditioning first.

Learning how to experiment again.
Learning how to trust your instincts again.
Learning how to stop treating every painting like a test.

THEN composition and colour and technique actually have somewhere to land.

We’ve been taught that learning the rules = getting better at art.

In expressive abstract painting, I honestly think over-focusing on rules too early is one of the fastest ways to disconnect from your creativity.

The rule that kills creative freedom most is the belief you have to earn the right to be expressive first.

You don’t.

I think a lot of us have spent years being taught to follow instructions, do things properly and avoid getting things wrong.

And then we wonder why we freeze up in front of a blank canvas.

You don’t need permission to explore.
You don’t need permission to loosen up.
You don’t need permission to make messy, intuitive, expressive work before you fully understand colour theory or composition.

Put your hands up if this sounds familiar.

When was the last time you painted like you were 4?

Hands in it.
Getting messy.
No plan. No pressure.

Just… making something because it felt good.

That’s what this is.

Not thinking about whether it looks right.
Not trying to control every mark.

Just getting in there and letting it be a bit chaotic.

If you’ve been stuck in your head with your painting…
try this.

Give yourself 5 minutes.
Be 4 again.

Finger painting. Hand painting. No rules.

See what happens.

P.S. Yes… you use gloves 😄
