I love it when I see items from our collection used lovingly and thoughtfully. Artisans take great pride in their craftsmanship; they create work that is strong in design, rich with story, exquisitely handcrafted and like know other. In purchasing works from our exhibition you help to continue traditional crafts and culture by contributing to the income of clusters and communities of artisans. A connection between the makers and the buyer is forged and the story and life of the work continues to evolve - valued and loved for a lifetime.

Maga Nayak – Master Painter of Patta Chitra and Palm Leaf Engravings (Pothi Chitra)

Nayakpatna Village, Odisha, India - a village of artists who provided arwork for the Lord Jagannath Temple in the nearby city famous for its annual Ratha Yatra

Maga Nayak is a descendant of a long line of traditional artists and is recognised as one of the few remaining masters of Pothi Chitra—the intricate art of engraving and illustrating palm-leaf manuscripts—as well as the celebrated Pattachitra painting tradition of Odisha.

Renowned for his exceptional brushwork and extraordinarily fine line engraving with a stylus, Maga Nayak illustrates stories from Hindu mythology, particularly the sacred narratives of Lord Jagannath and Lord Krishna. His paintings combine remarkable precision with a deep understanding of centuries-old iconography and storytelling.

Working within the traditional palette of Pattachitra, he uses natural pigments: red from hematite, black from lamp soot, green from leaves, white from powdered shell, together with blue and yellow mineral pigments. These enduring materials contribute to the distinctive richness and permanence of the paintings.

When I visited Maga Nayak in 2011, it was immediately apparent how highly respected he was within his community—not only for the quality of his own work but also for his tireless commitment to passing on these traditional skills. His home was filled with students quietly working under his patient guidance, ensuring that this remarkable artistic heritage continues for future generations.

The line drawing and painted silk Pattachitra featured in this exhibition has been part of the Divine Arts Company's collection since that visit in 2011. Maga was particularly keen that I include it among the portfolio of large Pattachitra and Pothi Chitra works I was taking with me that day. It is especially fitting that, fifteen years later, this beautiful work is being presented in the 2026 Exhibition, celebrating both the artist's extraordinary craftsmanship and the enduring dedication to his craft and community.

Slow fashion is not a new idea—it’s a tradition worth preserving.

For centuries, the Indian subcontinent has produced some of the world’s finest textiles, handwoven by skilled artisans in villages and communities for both local and international markets. While that market has changed, generations of weavers, embroiderers, dyers, block printers and textile painters continue to preserve remarkable skills, cultural traditions and ways of life that remain at the heart of their communities.

ARTISAN MADE is a curated exhibition by Divine Arts Company celebrating these extraordinary makers. It offers our community of artists, designers, collectors and textile lovers the opportunity to purchase garments and fabrics directly from the people who create them, and to discover the stories of the artists, their families and their communities.

Explore beautifully handcrafted cotton, silk, linen and wool fabrics that are spun, woven, painted, block printed, embroidered, hand stitched and naturally dyed using tools and techniques that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Created in homes and small workshops across India and Bangladesh, these textiles are organic, made in small batches or as one-of-a-kind pieces, using natural fibres and colours.

These are fabrics not measured by speed, but by skill, patience and care.

Silpinwita Das has developed a distinctive voice in contemporary Indian textile art. Her work brings together fine art, handwoven textiles and the rich tradition of natural dyes, creating garments and shawls that are as much works of art as they are objects to wear.
Using colours made from plants, bark, flowers, fruit and minerals, each textile is painted entirely by hand. No two pieces are ever the same, and each reflects the time, skill and patience that go into its making.
Nature is at the heart of her work. Birds, flowers, fish and botanical forms appear throughout her paintings, celebrating both the beauty of the natural world and the enduring traditions of Indian textile making.
Through HARIDRA, Silpinwita continues to demonstrate how traditional techniques can evolve without losing their authenticity. Her work reminds us that textile art is a living practice—one that honours heritage while continuing to grow through individual creativity. We offer a selection of Haridra art textiles and garments in our 2026 Collection 😍

Tushar and Mayur Vayeda are contemporary Warli artists whose practice brings Indigenous storytelling into dialogue with the present. Working from their home village in Maharashtra, India, the brothers draw on generations of Warli knowledge to create paintings, books and large-scale installations that shoe the interconnectedness of people with the natural world.
Their work has been exhibited internationally, including the 18 panel sublime “Dhartari: The Creation of the World” at the 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane, and is held in major collections around the world.
This featured print is from The Deep (2020), a beautifully illustrated book that invites readers into an underwater world imagined through the distinctive visual language of Warli art.
