Red Riding Hood is the most well known folktale in the world. But have you heard of her feisty, French forbear, who wore neither red, nor a hood? But she did use her wits to rescue herself and was aided in her escape by three laundresses. No huntsmen/woodcutter in sight! You might also be intrigued to meet dauntless Janet, who rescues her true love Tamlin from elves while they are at full gallop, at midnight in an enchanted forest! These ancient tales of daring, difficult women have mature content and are definitely not for young ears!

Your tale spinner will be Jenni Cargill-Strong, a nationally recognised storyteller, recently returned to Magandjin~Brisbane after a 30 year absence. This performance was recently a part of the Brisbane Anywhere Festival. All three shows sold out and the feedback was enthusiastic. (Testimonials and video excerpts at Humanitix link.)

Brisbane storylovers, if you missed my show in May for the Anywhere Festival Brisbane, you can catch it soon in Sandgate at WOMENSPACE! When I lived in Mullumbimby, I enjoyed the support of the amazing local paper there, The Northern Rivers Echo. They were very kind and supportive to creatives. Here in the suburbs of Brisbane, I didn't expect to find that. It is a significant boost to an independent creative, when local media promotes your show, as there is no margin for publicity.

Northern Rivers Storyloving Friends, I am telling stories very soon in Uki with 2 dear friends who are both talented tellers: Melaina Faranda and Russel Hibbs. Melaina organises this event and she wrote:

“The next 'Enchanted Evening' is July 17th at Uki Trinity Church. I'm quietly excited for how it's shaping up with professional storyteller, Jenni Cargill-Strong coming down from Brisbane (having recently had three sold-out shows at the Anywhere Festival Brisbane) and the also amazing Russell Hibbs who brings the particular joy of being the very first real-life professional storyteller / troubadour / bard I encountered nearly three decades ago.

As a trinity, it's a complete one-off and will be a total cliche-truism of not to be missed. Jenni has a big following in the Mullum area in particular (where she used to live), plus since our May event, it's been amazing how many people have approached me on the street, at a festival, in a shopping centre etc. to say they were there, or that they heard such great things about it and want to come to the next!

Much as it goes against my general ethos of - the more the merrier, part of the beauty of the space is in its intimacy and we had to turn people away for the last event so please book now if you're keen."

She brought a humour and playfulness to the stories that gave them life but also gave us a portal into times gone by. Jenni's singing was delightful and allowed me time travel to a time when stories were revered, as were the storytellers.
