I said, “You could always resell it.”
- “Never.”

This collector has a particular interest in figurative paintings of women.
He first discovered one of my works at an exhibition in Redcliffe Gallery. Later, he came across another one at the Albany Creek library and chose that one too.

He told me he plans to hang it where he can see it every day.

For me, that one word “Never” said a lot about how much the painting meant to him.

So, what does it actually mean to be a finalist in an art prize?

The painting was selected from all the entries.
It made it into the finalist exhibition.

The judging panel chose the winners from the finalists.

And I was happy to see my painting here.

It’s a chance for art lovers and collectors to discover new artists and their work.

The Meaning Behind It

Sometimes there are moments in everyday life that make us want to stop for a second and just take them in.

Children playing in the park.
The city going about its day.
Jacarandas in bloom.
Bright sunlight, green grass and purple petals covering the ground.

That was the moment behind Before the Moment Passes.

I wanted to capture the jacarandas in full bloom, but when I finally got to this little Brisbane park, they were already almost finished. The trees were still beautiful, with purple petals covering the ground. Children were playing, the sun was shining, and the whole place felt bright and full of life.

It made me think about how easily scenes like this can be missed.

That is what I wanted to keep in this painting. Not just the jacarandas, but the feeling of a Brisbane day like this: bright, fresh and full of everyday life.

In a home, this painting brings a sense of joy, freshness and connection to Brisbane, while keeping a small piece of the city alive a little longer.

Things like pigment quality, how the paint behaves on the surface, and the finish of the varnish can affect how a painting looks and performs over time.

Good material choices help preserve the colour, surface and finish that make the painting what it is.

Because the materials become part of the painting’s future.

A New Name, Same Art

A little change is coming to this page.

The page will soon be renamed Tatiana Afonina - a name that brings my art and my personal creative identity together more clearly.

The paintings, the process and the ideas behind them remain the same.

«I’m not an art expert. How do I know I’m making the right choice?»

You don’t need to know all the rules of art to choose a painting you’ll be happy to live with.

Start with these five questions:

1. What made me stop?
The colour? The light? The movement? The mood?

2. What does this painting do for me?
Does it calm me? Energise me? Make me curious?

3. What do I want from it at home?
Calm? Energy? Warmth? A sense of escape?

4. Am I drawn to it — or do I just like the way it looks?

5. If I saw it every day, would I still be happy I chose it?

There’s no “correct” answer to these questions. They’re simply a way to understand whether you’re choosing a painting you genuinely want to live with.
