📸 A look back at our Child Safety in Dance: In Principle & In Practice workshops

Over two, SOLD OUT, inspiring days, choreographers, organisations, studio owners, dance teachers, volunteers, administrators, dance educators and facilitators travelled from Yeppoon to the Gold Coast to explore practical, evidence-informed approaches to child safety in dance.

Together, we created a space to share ideas, challenge thinking, and participated in practical movement sessions to strengthen our collective commitment to creating environments where every child can learn, grow and thrive.

These workshops built on the foundations of Safedance for Kids®, supporting participants to turn child-safe principles into everyday practice.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, contributed so generously, and continues to champion safe, inclusive and positive dance experiences across Queensland.

💃 Regional Queensland dance artists and dance industry workers can 'make a move' to learn and lead by applying to be part of the Emerging Dance Exchange.

Delivered by the Regional Arts Services Network - RASN in collaboration with Ausdance Queensland, this free artist development program supports sustainable careers in dance through professional development, practical learning, sector exchange, resources and tailored mentoring.

Exploring Elegantly Wasted — Teacher Professional Development

How can dance help young people explore identity, authenticity, social media and human connection?

This September, Queensland Ballet is inviting teachers to HOTA for a practical, curriculum-aligned Teacher Professional Development session inspired by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s world-premiere production, Elegantly Wasted, set to reimagined music by INXS.

The title Elegantly Wasted may initially make some educators pause when considering its relevance for school-aged students. The content of this professional learning has been carefully considered through an education lens, and provides an opportunity to explore how modern dance can thoughtfully engage with themes young people are already navigating - including identity, image, social media, loneliness, authenticity, belonging and human connection. The work invites students to question the difference between performance and reality, curated personas and authentic connection, and what it means to truly be seen.

Teachers will:
· Gain insight into Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s choreographic process
· Learn student-appropriate adapted repertoire from the work
· Explore practical, classroom-ready choreographic tasks
· Participate in a Q&A with a member of the Elegantly Wasted creative team
· Connect the work to curriculum and professional practice

The session is mapped to AITSL Standards 2.1, 3.4, 6.2–6.4 and 7.4 and is designed to provide practical activities teachers can recontextualise and take directly into their classrooms.

Participants are also warmly invited to stay and observe Queensland Ballet’s technical rehearsal following the session.
